Why can’t I use Viber on some Wi-Fi networks?

If you are connected to Wi-Fi and you are able to browse the web, but still cannot establish a Viber call, the most probable cause is that the required ports are closed.

The ports which are used by Viber are:
TCP: 5242 and 4244
UDP: 5243 and 9785

You should enable those ports (ingoing and outgoing) on your router and your firewall. If it is not your private network, you should contact the network administrator.

    Thnx says Battie

  • Sarah

I HAVE VIBER INSTALLED, BUT IT STATES THAT SERVICE IS DISCONNECTED.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN THAT THE SERVICE IS DISCONNECTED? IS THIS FROM THE SERVICE PROVIDER?

    • ViberTeam

No, it means your phone is unable to connect to Viber's service.
      1. Are you connected to WiFi or 3G? What country are you located in?
      2. Did you try reinstalling Viber from Market?

      • guest

Hi Viber! I have the same problem like Sarah.
        1. I used WiFi connection. I am from Romania (certainly different as Sarah).
        2. I set the the router ports that work Viber.
        3. I installed twice times. But every time the same problem.
        4. I have a Chinese dual-sim phone with Android 2.2.1
        5. Excuse my english.

        • http://www.viber.com Viber

          Your English is fine :)

Please test Viber on your Android when connected to a few different WiFi networks. Does this problem occur on all of them?

          • guest

I tested again, (I recognize in the same WiFI network). Now disappeared the message:”service is disconnected”. But I think the program work in background and when is displayed on the screen appears as is running and at a time disappeared in background. I think the phone is not able to run this program. I don’t know. The phone have CPU MTK6516 (416MHz) and 256 MB RAM.

          • http://www.viber.com Viber

What phone do you have? Which version of Android?

Also – are you running a Custom ROM?

          • guest

This the phone: (I don’t know if I have rights to publish a link):
            http://www.mixmelot.com/sku-26067
Many times it is possible to not correspond the written specifications with the real phone.
I don’t understand “-are you running a Custom ROM?” You refer to TF card which it is 2GB Knigston TF card?

          • http://www.viber.com Viber

Please note that Viber does not officially support your device yet, and that may be the reason for the problems you are experiencing. Here is the full list of officially supported devices: http://bit.ly/rqbZEw

We are continuously working to adapt Viber to more and more devices, and we hope to attend to the problems with your device soon. We apologize for the inconvenience.

            Hi,
What device do you have? Which version of operating system?

  • Amy

iv got the same problem as well.
a few days ago my viber worked perfectly fine on the network in currently trying to use
today, however it says "service disconnected!"
    im using an android phone
any comments on what this problem could be?
    thanks for the help

    • ViberTeam

      @Amy

      Does the problem still persist?
Please take a look at the questions I asked Sarah above, and reply to me with your answers, so we can try and identify the problem.

  • Louis

    Besides ports
    TCP: 5242 and 4244
    UDP: 5243 and 9785
you will also need to allow port
    7985 UDP
    Cheers,
    LMHORTA

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

7985 UDP port is not a Viber port. You probably mean 9785, and this port was specified above.

  • Jeltusan

I would like to use Viber via my NetCom mobile phone network (with which I have an Internet access). Is that possible? It doesnt work with the WiFi network on my work and I am reluctant to ask our IT to sort it out

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

If NetCom is a 3G network, then yes, you should be able to use Viber on it just fine.

About your work WiFi – well, it’s up to you ;)
We gave you the ports that should be opened, all you have to do is give them that information.

  • Arunakiran

I m using Motorola flipout (android version 2.1) And i downloaded Viber through market, but i m facing the prb tht my voice is not reaching to other side….at the same time with my iPod i m enjoying Viber calls…so its clear my n/w connections and settings r gud…so plz help me out in this regard

  • Rahul_nrg

i had installed viber almost a month ago knowing that it would be blocked for usage as i live in oman.

(fyi: my wifi is free but i don’t own one.)

however, a few days ago, i was surprised to see that viber got connected and i was able to place free calls and send messages. then, to just make sure that this wasn’t a glitch, i restarted my phone and viber as well. the result shows that it remained disconnected for a bit and then tried to connect. connecting the service took a very long time and i figured it had something to do with the connection speed of my wifi. after hours, it gets connected and i am able to place free calls and send messages.

now the problem i face is that when i place or receive calls, i can’t hear the person on the other end (who also uses viber). the call goes and comes through, but while calling, the person on the other end claims that when she answers the call, she is not able to hear me speak. viz-a-vie when she calls and when i answer, i am not able to hear her. does this have to do with my connection speed again or something else?

also, sending messages is not a problem. they work!

for aesthetics, the receiving ring tone is quite shabby and so is the message sending and receiving notification tones.

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

      Hmm… strange.

As far as we understood, the block in Oman simply doesn’t allow all users within it to use Viber (meaning it is the same block as in the UAE).

The problem you are describing *could* theoretically be caused by a VERY low internet connection, but I don’t think this is the case. You can simply test it by trying out other VoIP applications and comparing. For example: Skype.

It is more likely that VoIP was blocked, but the fact that you can send/receive messages confuses me. Which ISP is your WiFi connected to?

      Let’s do this -
      1. find other WiFi network, and see if the problem persists.
      2. have a friend in Oman check Viber on their phone. Is it the same?

      • Rahul_nrg

I totally agree with you! This confused me as well!

Being blocked in Oman, would practically mean that any use of VoIP services would be futile. But surprisingly, Viber actually works! I am able to place calls and receive like I mentioned. Only drawback is that the call does not go through. Although sending messages work like a charm! In fact, somewhat faster than Whatsapp! I tried the same by logging in with Skype but no dice! Very strange indeed!

As far as ISPs are concerned, I use both Nawras and Omantel.

Nawras WiFi is used at home (a rented out flat), from a common building/floor router which obviously is quite slow, but after a bit of time, it manages to connect Viber thereby enabling me to place and receive calls and send messages as well.

Where I work, at the hotel, I obviously have access to free WiFi, which is provided by Omantel, which also surprisingly, connects Viber (in lesser time than at home) and enables me to do everything that Viber provides me to do.

Only drawback again in both places and by both ISPs, the calls don’t go through, whether its made or received, but messaging works!

As of right now, I am writing to you from the hotel accommodation where I currently reside. The internet provided here is much slower than what I use at home. But Viber says “connecting to service…” which clearly means, it is attempting to connect.

I will ask one of my friends to download Viber and test this out.

        • http://www.viber.com Viber

Great. I’ll be waiting for the results :)

  • Serge

When I’m connected via WiFi and try to place a call using Viber it says “Viber service is currently
unavailable or being blocked…” and messages never reach their destination (I get a red exclamation mark icon near them). But when I’m connected via 3G it works fine.
The WiFi I’m using is my personal at home and I know there’s no firewall on the router that could be blocking the aforementioned ports.
What could be the reason for this problem?
I live in Israel if that helps.

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

Hmm.. it does sound after all as if you do have a firewall, or at least that your router is blocking ports. Did you check it?

Enter your router’s configuration, and make sure the following ports are open:
      TCP: 5242 + 4244
      UDP: 5243 + 9785

      • Serge

I solved the problem by entering the device’s IP undress in the router’s DMZ.

        • Serge

          address*

          • http://www.viber.com Viber

That could also be a solution :)

            Good, enjoy Viber!

  • Serge

Maybe I should add that when I’m connected to my neighbour’s unsecure network it also works fine, mine is secure with WPA2 (using passphrase).

  • Jorge Centellas Ayala

I have firewall and all the ports are open, but when I call to someone in the same place, i have my viber ringing and the other person answer but no leasen nothing.

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

Please try using Viber on a different WiFi network. Does it work now?
If so, then the problem is still somewhere with your local WiFi network.

  • Alimrahoojo

If viber works on iphone 2G
    Ali

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

Viber officially supports iPhone 3G and above. Viber *might* work on your 2G, but even if it does, it’s not going to be fully compatible.

  • hugh

Hi there, just wanted to inform you about a little typing mistake in your “Why can’t I use Viber on some Wi-Fi networks?” article. You accidentally typed “abale to browse” instead of “able to browse” :D .

I think this application will be the future! You should consider programming a desktop version because Skype is just not staying on top of the situation when it comes to Mac users!

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

Viber for PC/Mac – in the works already :)

      • hugh

        Niiicceee :D
One thing you should take a look at is the heat problem Skype causes on Macs! I bet a lot of people will be interested in a Skype alternative that doesn’t turn your laptop into a frying pan ;)
I think reducing the isight framerate will take care of part of the heat problem… depending if you are planning to embed video calls at all.

However I’m happy to see that some people are developing great stuff ;)
        Keep up the good work!

        Cheers,
        Hugh

    • Anonymous

      Thank for pointing that out.
      It is fixed now.

  • Sargue

Weird. How can I open ports for more than one device on the same wi-fi? Tricky, if not impossible. That prevents using Viber for me and my wife, and anyone visiting and having a dynamic internal address.

Sucks a bit, IMHO. It seems to me you’re trying to make direct connections (to save on bandwith?).

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

Opening ports is an action you make in your own network, regardless of how many devices you use. If your network is set in a way that 2 network identities collide with each other, then there’s not much we (Viber) can do to help, since it’s not something we can control in any way.

If I misunderstood your problem, please try to explain again and elaborate.

      • Sargue

I will try to explain with an example.

Two smartphones with Viber, on the same home LAN with an ADSL router providing internet access.

        Smartphone A with Viber: 192.168.1.7
        Smartphone B with Viber: 192.168.1.8

Let’s use port TCP 5242 for the example (the first one from your list).

Please, tell me how can I open that port (which I understand as a NATP mapping on my router) for BOTH devices. I surely can redirect it to the A device or the B device, but not both!

        • http://www.viber.com Viber

          Why not for both?
If you have many computers on the same LAN network, and they all browse the internet, they all use port 80, and they all work together without any collisions.

Simply try it out – connect a few smartphones with Viber on the same LAN network and see for yourself that it works just fine. If it doesn’t work – then there’s a different problem.

But how do I get to my firewall settings on Windows 7? Please help!!

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

Note that other than firewall settings this issue can be related also to your router configuration.

For more information on how to change these settings you may google it or contact your router supplier.

  • Cliff

Does viber use UPnP to open the ports it needs?

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

If you meant to ask if Viber uses UPnP ports (1900, 2869) then no, Viber uses the following ports:

      TCP: 5242 and 4244
      UDP: 5243 and 9785

      • LoyalViberUser

Hi, I’ve recently moved and activated those ports as instructed but Viber works only occasionally e.g. I can sometimes receive a message but not send a message. And voice calling on Viber almost always does not work. Are there additional ports that Viber uses? Please advise.

        • http://www.viber.com Viber

          Hmmm…
Are you sure you enabled these ports correctly?

Please try to run a quick test by trying Viber out on a few different WiFi networks. See if the same problem (functioning occasionally) happens also there.

  • Jessica

I’m trying to use Viber in my iPod, while connected to my university’s wifi.
I really don’t how to configurate the ports, could you please help me?

You need to contact the network administrator or simply Google it.

  • Rahul_nrg

I have some rather strange but really good news for you guys from Viber!

My Viber connected yesterday and not only was able to place calls, receive calls, send and receive messages, but also HEAR the person on the other end!

I was absolutely excited but after having a long 2 hours conversation, I began thinking why on earth did it connect! If Oman regulations are so strict in blocking such services, why did this work?

Anyways, I will let you know in a few hours if I am able to connect and talk with my friends today as well!

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

      Hi Rahul,
Thanks for this great feedback, we’d be delighted to hear more about it when you have any news :)

      • Rahul_nrg

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

      Hi Rahul,
      What device do you use?
      iPhone should work properly.
Regarding Android, it’s partially supported at the moment.

Samsung Galaxy S2. Thought you I had mentioned that in my previous posts! Any who… I tried accessing your help me page but of course Omantel decided to block the page. Is there any way you could email me a link to any other forum perhaps?

        • http://www.viber.com Viber

The official versions of Viber for iPad and iPod are in the works, however, Viber already works on these devices.

  • Josip Marich

Hi i am using viber on iphone on wifi and my girlfriend on androdid on 3g, and when we talk i get huge delay when i’m talking and i hear myself in speaker. i really would like some help. thank you

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

3G networks can sometimes be disrupted and consequently affect the quality of VoIP calls. We are working on adding a feature that will adapt to disruptions in order to ensure stable calls on 3G networks. In general, WiFi- WiFi calls on Viber sound clear and are free of such disruptions.

Please try a WiFi-WiFi call and see if it’s different. This information will help determine the source of the problem.

      • Josip Marich

wifi – wifi works fine, but 3g has distruptions….

  • Rahul_nrg

Excellent news! Viber works very well on my iPod and Samsung Galaxy S2. Only requirement is a very good internet connection. Only few but small issues persist as far as bluetooth connectivity is concerned with my Galaxy and the ringtones! Sound quite cheesy! ;P

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

Bluetooth – we’re continuously working to improve Viber’s integration with Bluetooth. We hope that in our next updates, there will be serious improvements.

Ringtone – we will add an option to alter Viber’s ringtone in the future.

Hi, I can use viber fine with Wap wifi network. But when I try to use viber with a wifi network that needs authentication I get the message “cannot connect …” I am using a Galaxy S I9000 with proxydroid. Please help

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

What kind of authentication does the network require?
Also – did you make sure that the network enables Viber’s ports?

      These are the ports:

      TCP: 5242 + 4244
      UDP: 5243 + 9785

      • Akh

        Thanks for your prompt reply
The network uses a proxy that needs a username and password. I had the same problem with skype but when I installed on my phone Proxydroid I overcomed the problem for skype but not for viber. For the proxy port on Proxydroid I changed it from 8080 to 5242 without success. Thanks in advance

        • http://www.viber.com Viber

All Viber ports need to be open, not only 5242. If this network allows a single port (only) to be opened, unfortunately it’s not enough and Viber won’t be able to function properly :(

  • Jeabjaz

Hi I just upgraded my Viber to new version 2.1.1.126 since it has been upgraded I can’t make a call or received a call thru Viber anymore can you please assist.

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

What exactly do you see when you try to make a call?
Also – did you try uninstalling, then installing again?

  • Stephen

I am using Viber… works fine until I hit the hotels… any idea how I can wrap the network packets to get them through the hotel firewalls… they will not open up the ports so looking for an alternative method to get it working.

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

Unfortunately there is no workaround for this issue as of now. You need to contact the admins of the networks and have them open the following ports:
      TCP: 5242 + 4244
      UDP: 5243 + 9785

  • Jayhvasani

        • http://www.viber.com Viber

We haven’t encountered a similar problem so far so it’s hard for us to provide you with a solution.

What country do you live in? Which cellular network are you using?

          • Jayhvasani

i am living in india and i m using airtel network. it connects with 3g easily but cant work with wifi.

          • http://www.viber.com Viber

If Viber works fine on your 3G network but fails to work on WiFi, then your WiFi might be blocking Viber’s ports.

Please read the instructions at the top of this page and enable the ports specified there in your Router. If you don’t know how to access your router and open these ports, contact the router’s manufacturer or Google it for instructions.

  • Kanzaki GNT

    Hello,

Is there a way to know, on my network, if the required ports are blocked?
I’m in France, using the University internet connection and it doesn’t seem to work. However it works perfectly well in 3G.

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

Usually universities allow only port 80 (websites, HTTP), so unfortunately it is likely that they block Viber’s ports. You can contact the admins and ask them, or simply – try to use Viber, and if it says to you that it’s being blocked – this is how you’ll know.

      • Kanzaki GNT

Can you provide us with the exact ports Viber uses so I can manually check if they’re allowed, and perhaps ask the admins to unblock those specific ports? Thanks

        • http://www.viber.com/ Viber

These are the ports that Viber uses:

          TCP: 5242 + 4244
          UDP: 5243 + 9785

          • Kanzaki GNT

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

Unfortunately, as far as we know Viber is blocked in Oman completely.
We have heard from some users that only Viber’s messaging works on certain networks (some WiFi networks and Nawras’ 3G network).

      Can you confirm that?

  • Josip Marich

hello i updated viber now and it says no internet connection… i tried on wifi and 3g…an it doesn’t work. please help!

  • http://www.facebook.com/juraj.benak Juraj Benak

Hello, I’ve opened the ports on our firewall but despite that I still can’t send nor receive messages.

Other wireless network that has all ports open is working just fine. Is there any other port that might need to be open apart those 4?

    Thanks

    • http://www.facebook.com/juraj.benak Juraj Benak

ok so I was able to analyze it a bit and the source port actually varies from quite a bit of range. can u specify where it starts and finishes? I set it up for all of them from 54000 to 56000 but it takes bit of time as I suspect it might start somewhere around 40k.

      thanks

      • http://www.viber.com Viber

The ports listed above are the ports Viber is using. The ports you saw when you analyzed your network don’t belong to Viber – these are internal ports inside your network (between your phone and the router), and they are irrelevant to Viber’s functionality. In other words, the only ports that you should look at are the “Destination Ports”.

Let’s try something else – try opening all of your UDP ports (outgoing). Does Viber work now?
If it still doesn’t work, try opening all TCP ports (outgoing). Now, does it work?

The results of this test (that must be done step-by-step) could help you and us analyze the problem.

        • http://www.facebook.com/juraj.benak Juraj Benak

          thanks for reply.

Fortigate is bit more complicated device and I opened source port to the destination ports only, which didn’t work as Viber I gues is using random source ports – so I opened broader spectrum which works well now.

          • http://www.viber.com Viber

            That’s great news :)
We’re glad it works now. Enjoy!

        • Etwllc

Please advise how to change UDP and TCP on ipad

          • http://www.viber.com Viber

Enabling ports happens on your router or your firewall, not on the device (iPad) itself.

Please contact your network administrator or your router’s manufacturer for more details.

  • viberlover

hello i would like to know if viber is blocked whit my morrocan provider network ADSL or not because its several time that i want to have a call but a message error display “an internet connection is required to place viber free calls ” even if my iphone is fully connected to a wifi
    so help me please

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

Unfortunately we are indeed suspecting that the Moroccan authorities blocked Viber recently, and now it is not possible to use it anywhere in the country.

There is unfortunately not much we can do to help – please try contacting your cellular provider and ask for the reason for this block.

      • Ismail

That’s not true. I live in Morocco and I’m able to use viber on wifi network as well as on 3G. If you can’ use viber, check if you have the right ports enabled on your router.

        • http://www.viber.com Viber

          Hi Islmail,
We’ve been getting hundreds of reports from users whose Viber is blocked (both on WiFi and 3G), and our statistics show a big decrease in Viber usage in Morocco. How are you able to use Viber? Are all of your friends using Viber normally as well?

          • Ismail

Sorry for the confusion. You must be right. But the last time I used viber on 3G network was 3 days ago. Now I can’t test because I’m away and don’t have access to 3G. But I noticed that viber doesn’t work indeed on public wifi.
            Regards

          • http://www.viber.com Viber

Have you tried contacting the Moroccan authorities or your cellular company to ask for the reason for this block? What did they say?

  • Benagz

Until today Viber was working properly, but today every time I try to make a call or send a message, there is a message error “Viber service is currently unavailable or being blocked. Please try again later. Place a regular call instead?”
This is the first time I got this message.
I am using WiFi and didn’t change nothing at all.
I managed just once to send a message after I got this message, and afterward was again the same error message.
    Thnx

I recently installed viber in samsung ace. it work well yesterday in wi fi, but today it say Viber service is currently unavailable or being blocked. am in singapore trying to call my family in india by viber.

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

There might have been a temporary issue blocking Viber.
      Does the problem still persist?

If it does, then please make sure neither you nor the other side are connected to networks that might be blocking Viber (for example – a router running a firewall).

      1. First, please try uninstalling and reinstalling Viber when connected to different WiFi networks. Does it work now?
      2. Also, please make sure the following ports are enabled on your routers:
      TCP: 5242 + 4244
      UDP: 5243 + 9785

(if you are not sure how to enable ports, contact your router manufacturer)

I’ve even tried to reset my phone to the last savingpoint via itunes on my computer but the Viber app acts the same. And I’m in Sweden. Maybe it’s just the iphone? My friend has an android and his works fine. The most annoying thing is that mine still makes the sound and the “pre-message” pops up when people send me messages but when I click on them I get to the stupid “insert number here, but I wont connect”-page!

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

Did you try using Viber on both the cellular network, and a few DIFFERENT WiFi networks? This problem occurs on all of them?

  • Gilbertocrisanti

Hi, I am living in Spain and have a wifi router by Orange. My Viber was not working with wifi, but it did with 3g connection. I just solved the issue. Here it comes how I did it.
I went to the address of my router (in my case 192.168.1.1), I logged in, I went to advanced configuration, then NAT/PAT.
Add new rule. Rule 1: External port 5242, Internal Port 4244. Rule 2 External Port 5243, Internal Port 9785. The End. Easy
I am so happy it did work. I didn’t know I was so technical!!!

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

Lol, we’re also happy it works now :)

If you notice, though, these are the exact instructions that we give at the top of this page.

Hi, I have Viber on my iphone and it doesn’t work in work (University): only shows preview and it rings, but I can’t answer or read the messages.
It works fine at home tho.
Is there anything I can do beside contacting network provider (might be tough as it’s a big Univ)?
    Thanks so much.

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

Unfortunately there is not much else to do rather than contacting them, since Viber’s ports are simply blocked (it’s a technical barrier).

In the future we might adapt Viber to work also on HTTP ports, in order to try and help our users in universities etc. use Viber, at least for texting.

got viber on Iphone4 since yesterday i cant send message or call. i unistall and install again. now it ask me to check my network connectivity ….

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

Our assumption right now is that the Chinese authorities have decided to block Viber 2 days ago (as they’ve threatened to do for a while now). If that’s the case, then unfortunately there is not much we can do to help :(

In order to help us understand this problem further, may I please ask that you test Viber on a few different WiFi networks, and also on other 3G networks (by other providers), in order to determine whether or not this is a complete, national block?

      Thank you in advance.

I’m in Shenzhen china too. As of this past Sunday (2/12/2012) I am unable to make outgoing Viber calls. I was able to pick up calls – but I made the mistake of uninstalling my Viber and redownloading – now I can’t even register!
Any way you can reactivate my account remotely so I can at least receive Viber
        Calls? :(

  • joregelt

    hello
    I am new viber user.
    HTC desire android 2.3.6
I am able to make and receive calls via 3G and it works well.

I am able to make and receive calls via wifi BUT I cannot hear any sound.
The other side of the call can hear me, I cannot hear them, in fact it sounds like the call is still ringing out, when in fact they have answered and can hear me,
This occurs when I make the call, and also when they make the call and I answer.

I HAVE opened the ports listed above in the firewall.

Can you suggest what could be the problem?
It seems the audio stream is being blocked?

    Daniel

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

The fact that it works fine on 3G but not on WiFi basically proves that you’re still blocked on your WiFi network. you’ll need to contact your router manufacturer for help, since you said that you’re sure that the ports are forwarded correctly, but one side is still not transmitted.

    • HB

Is it going to be possible to get viber to work like skype in the near future? e.g. try the programs own ports and if it fails fallback on port 80?

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

Working on port 80 (HTTP ports) is something we are considering these days. It’s a little technologically complex, so it might take a little while. Once we have news on that, we will publish it on our Facebook page :)

      Hi,

      1. First, please try uninstalling and reinstalling Viber when connected to a few different WiFi networks. Does it work now?
      2. Also, please make sure the following ports are enabled on your routers or firewalls:
      TCP: 5242 + 4244
      UDP: 5243 + 9785

(if you are not sure how to enable ports, contact your router manufacturer)

      • Alunz

hello, I was open on our firewall
        1) TCP 5242
        2) TCP 4244
        3) UDP 5243
        4) UDP 9785
        ingoing & outgoing
But, still can not get connection to viber server.
Is there have any other port I need to open on firewall?
Because if I allow all service on firewall, it’s works fine.
        Thanks for your help.

        • http://www.viber.com Viber

If it’s a firewall that’s blocking Viber, then it may be blocking something else that Viber tries to use (not only ports).

You may need to contact the Firewall developers for more support on this issue.

  • Pablo Bouyssounade

The actual port is UDP 7985 and not 9785.
At least that what my firewall is dropping.
added to 7985 and problem solved.
Please not that I left 9785 still as allowed through the firewall. Not sure whether this is required but I’m to lazy to keep testing.
Basically I have allowed the following ports:
    TCP: 5242 and 4244
    UDP: 5243, 9785 and 7985

Probably someone from Viber needs to update their documentation.

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

We will check this issue, but for now no changes were made in the ports that we use, and it should still be 9785.

Have you tried blocking (or “unallowing”) 9785? Then what happens?

      • http://www.facebook.com/mido.ali3 Mahmood Ali

VIBER ON 3G GIVE THIS EROR ( an internet connection is required to place free viber calls) BUT IN WIFI WORK GOOD

        WAHT I DO???

        • http://www.viber.com/ Viber

Some mobile operators across the world block Viber on their 3G network. Usually this happens when users have a “simple” data plan (or a prepaid contract), meaning they didn’t pay extra for using VoIP on their 3G network.

In order to verify this, we recommend that you contact your cell company and confirm this with them.

          • Matt Parker

You can use a VPN on your mobile device. I personally use SSLPrivateProxy VPNs and they work like a charm with Viber and any other application.

    • LRC

Same here! I first opened ports tcp5242, tcp4244, udp5243 and udp9785 and under our wi-fi network one could place a call but got imediately disconected as soon as the other part (also under our wi-fi network) anwsered; then after opening port udp7985 everything is working fine!

      • http://www.viber.com/ Viber

        These are Viber’s ports:

        TCP: 5242 + 4244
        UDP: 5243 + 9785

Note that it is UDP:9785, and not 7985 as you mentioned.

        • LRC

Ok! Thats the ports I first opened following the first post I read. But only after opening tcp7985 – as Pablo Bouyssounade refered, 9 months ago – i could call another viber user, both inside our network.

          Anyway: it’s working!

            Well,

When connecting through proxy, you are subject to the Proxy’s settings (they could even be virtually unknown to you, since you are connecting to the internet through a 3rd-party).

It could be that that proxy is blocking Viber’s traffic/ports, or VoIP protocols in general. In order to solve this problem, you’ll need to contact the proxy server administrators and see if they can help you sort this problem out.

Give them the info that’s posted in this article, above.

            Dear Sir,
is there any chance to develop Viber so that it may work on any port i specify ?!
since it’s blocked in UAE and the only way to use it is by using a VPN connection, i really want to make ISP suffer and i think you can make that happen if you add more most used ports.
            Thanks in advance

          • http://www.viber.com Viber

            Hi,

We are not even sure that in the UAE Viber is blocked by port (it may be the case, but it might also no be the case).

At this stage we unfortunately don’t plan to add the option of changing Viber’s port. In the future we might provide this option.

Meanwhile, we invite you to enter our Feature Request page and post your suggestion there, or join an existing similar suggestion. The more people join on a request, the faster it will become reality :)

You can find it here: http://helpme.viber.com/index.php/Knowledgebase/Article/View/43/9/have-an-idea-for-a-new-feature

          • Ayman

            Dear Sir,
i think its blocked by port since some other voip softwares work like charm, the unknown ones of course and not for long, UAE uses a proxy server that passes few websites from being blocked so its manually added for sure and not websense.

thanks for your suggestion and i will post there for sure and even ask all uae people to do so :)

      Hi,

Viber system is currently experiencing connectivity issues. This is related to our hosting provider (Amazon) that is having a major problem that also affects many other services worldwide.

Amazon is on it, and we hope that with their help we’ll be able to restore Viber’s service soon.

We apologize for the temporary inconvenience.

We are suspecting that the authorities in Iran have decided to block Viber in the whole country, and that is why you are experiencing this issue. Unfortunately there is not much we can do to help :(

You may try contacting the authorities and ask for the reason for this block.

        * The fact that some devices can still use Viber normally suggests that the block might be gradual. We are still trying to understand ourselves the technical properties of this block.

You can always use a VPN on your mobile device. With the VPN, your provider can’t block viber or other services anymore.

Is there a way to increase the size of the font in the Viber application? I don’t want to increase the font on all of my applications, just Viber.

    Hello,
I am using viber on my galaxy note2 on wifi networks no issues to sending or recieving calls and messages but when i am using data from my operator which is vodafone spain i cant even send or recieve calls not even messages. Can u plz tell what can be wrong? Thanks in advance

    • http://www.viber.com/ Viber

Some mobile operators across the world block Viber on their 3G network. Usually this happens when users have a “simple” data plan (or a prepaid contract), meaning they didn’t pay extra for using VoIP on their 3G network.

In order to verify this, we recommend to contact your cell company and confirm this with them.

  • Khaled Hamadmad

Hello,I am using Viber on my Windows desktop and when I connect to some public WiFi in the street, Viber stops working. I know they disable the ports, but how can I change the ports on my PC .. I think it’s possible unlike the phone app.. any help plz

    • http://www.viber.com/ Viber

      @Khaled Hamadmad -

Unfortunately Viber’s ports are fixed at this stage. We will consider adding the option to change the ports in future versions.

      These are Viber’s ports:
      TCP: 5242 and 4244
      UDP: 5243 and 9785
