Viber 2.1 – Photo messaging for iPhone and Android

Last big update was Viber 2.0 which introduced text messaging. This time, almost 7 months after, Viber 2.1 enhanced messaging with photos, location sharing and new sound engine. The difference is also that this time Viber released two applications at once – for iPhone and Android.

Photo Messaging
Free text messaging (SMS) was a real hit and Viber users are sending literally billions of messages. Now, with Viber 2.1, you can even send photos. You can take new photo, or use one from your existing library. Usage is simple and intuitive, as it should be on smartphones.
Please not that it is not a MMS and you can not compose text with an picture or make slideshow, but those are anyway rarely used MMS features. Much closer comparison would be sending picture by Skype.


New Sound Engine
Although the incredible sound quality was a one of the main Viber features, it usually caused a problems when talking over 3G mobile network with bad signal or over EDGE connection. Now, with new engine, the calls should be much more flawless, even in not perfect conditions.

  • Location sharing. Now you can enable tagging your messages with your current location
  • Typing notification indicates that your friend is writing text response
  • Enhanced graphics for Retina displays

        I have recently installed Viber on my I Phone 3GS. Unfortunately for some bizarre reason my contacts haven’t been transferred over. When launching the app, after a couple of seconds it crashes. Also the duration of all my calls (International & national) last no longer the 1 min 20 secs.

        P.S I have downloaded the latest version of the apple software.

        Please could you help me as I find the app very useful.

            Unfortunately there is no way of going back to the old version. It sounds as if your friends are still using the old version of Viber. Please tell them to upgrade and then it should work just fine.

      This is a known issue and we’re trying to fix it at the moment. Meanwhile, I would recommend to deactivate Viber, remove it and try to reinstall.

          In order to utilize the potential of the new sound codec, both sides have to have the latest version installed. Please make sure of that, then try again.

    Hi, my iphone 4 has problems and needs to be upgraded by the tech people I got it from. They told me my apps will be lost and i have to re install them. Will I lose my messages on viber? Aren’t they saved on my itunes so they can be saved back when I sync after upgrading? Is there any way to save my messages?

      Unfortunately yes, your Viber messages will be lost once you uninstall and then reinstall.

      We plan to implement an option in the future to backup your Viber messages, but for now it’s not available :(

          There was a bug that caused the deletion of messages even after rebooting of the iPhone. It is fixed now on 2.1.2 – please check and see if it now works.

    Since i have installed Viber 2.1 on my IPhone 3G, it is sending/receiving messages extremely slow. Mo more able to chat on it because of that. It takes up to 20 min for a message to be sent! My rinds that have 3Gs and 4G phones experience the same issues. Please advise?

        We don’t know of any special problem with sending/receiving Viber texts since the new version has been released.
        You might want to upgrade your Viber to the latest Viber 2.1.1 (and instruct your friends to do the same) and then test it again.

        Also, check that the internet connection on both sides is stable.

          why are the messages getting or being erased the next day or when you re-boot your phone? Using the current Viber 2.1 on iOS5 for Apple. We loved the sending message bar that has been removed. And now the talk and sound quality has deteriorated. Is their a way to store messages bck again on our phones?

    My friend and I have recently updated Viber on our iPhones to 2.1.1.126. We really appreciate the improvements you’ve made to the instant messaging part. Picture messaging, landscape mode, instant indication of the other party typing…. we love it all and greatly appreciate the new features. They are excellent additions to the great app. Thank you very much!

    But, ever since the upgrade, we noticed that the sound quality we get through Viber has significantly deteriorated. We have good wifi connections while using Viber, so it can’t be the connection that is causing the problem. I suspect it might be the new sound engine. Is the sound quality from the new engine(when having good internet connection) actually worse compared to the older one? Or do you think it’s something specific to our case? I see that there are similar comments from other users on the Apple Appstore.

    We loved Viber for it’s sound quality; this is precisely the reason we talk on viber in spite of having unlimited talktime between our numbers. We would really like to get the old sound quality back. Is there something we can do to fix the situation? If the new sound engine is the problem, could it be possible to provide an update where the user can choose between the new and the old sound engines?

    Once again, thanks for great app and all the new features… I hope you’ll look into the sound quality problems I mentioned and make Viber even better!

      The new sound engine may be the cause for the lowering of the quality (though we haven’t noticed such a great decline in quality, as you describe), but that is merely the price of its advantages: it helps supporting stable Viber calls on 3G after a long period of time where that was virtually impossible, it is less buggy and it is overall lighter.

      At any rate, we are looking into this issue these days and are trying to find a possible way to improve the quality the best we can. Please stay tuned for updates, and we would appreciate if you let us know what you think as new versions are released.

    hi a few days ago i have updated my viber to version 2.1.1.126, and today i received a push notification that my friend send me a message, when i tried to open it, it was blank and all my old messages and recent calls are all gone. can you help me check whats the problem or can i still retrieve the messages, i have some important messages.

      Unfortunately there is no way to recapture chat history of a user, since we have committed to our users that we will not save the content of our users’ text messages (which is actually a good thing!)

      We know there is a problem for some of our users where messages get deleted. We are doing our best to solve this issue as soon as possible, and we apologize dearly for the info lost :(

      Unfortunately there is no way to download the old version. Please instruct your friends to download the new version of Viber – the reason for the incompatibility is a complex technical reason, that has to do with the fact that we improved our sound engine in the new version.

    i have an iPhone 3g, iOS 4.1. i know you said fiber does not support 3g, but it was working fine. i recently tried to send a picture and it froze, and now every time i try to send a text message, the message box moves all the way to the side right when i start typing, so the send button is hidden and i can not press send. Also, the text message box is black so i can’t see what I’m typing. And i never receive any calls, or notifications when someone calls me. i just get a missed call notification. Please help, I’m scared to download the newest version because of all these problems I’m encountering and hearing about.

        Sorry that answer is totally bogus and unacceptable. Viber was working perfectly on my iPhone 3G until the App Store posted an upgrade to the Viber application. Since upgrading to the latest Version of Viber the app now wont even load on my phone without crashing. Just tell me how to get the old version back again and everything will be fine!

          Unfortunately that isn’t possible – we cannot rollback to older version of Viber.

          As I mentioned, we are looking into the problems these days, but we still don’t know when we will have a fixed version for iPhone 3G.

          You have to remember that both iPhone 3G and iOS3 are quite obsolete. We are doing our best to support it, but we can’t guarantee that it will happen soon. We apologize for the inconvenience.

    I also used Viber on iphone 3G, 3GS and Ipod touch with IOS 3.1.3 but with any viber upgrade past 2.0.3, the application will simply open and close right away. I think many thousand of people that did not want to upgrade to ios 4 or 5 are in the same situation.

    To solve the issue I rolled back to 2.0.3 by erasing the apps from I phone and re-synch with I tunes because I tunes had kept the old version in memory.

    But that version 2.0.3 is not able now to communicate with people using Viber 2.1 or newer, I get the message telling me to upgrade…all this is pretty annoying.

    I hope that compatibility issue will be resolved, or please allow the old versions to communicate again with the newer ones

    My viber 2.1.2 for android seems to crash with my galaxy tab p1000 messaging. If i open the sms messaging with viber running at the background, it will sure force close the messaging application (process com.android.mms). Google Services framework(process com.google.process.gapps) will crash. Then my system will just restart viber again. If i open the sms messaging again, the same thing happens.

          At this stage, we don’t support custom ROMs with Viber (except basic ones, like CM7 and MIUI). Running Viber on a customized ROM results in various side effects, some of which are severe, but unfortunately we can’t afford to support ALL those ROMs at this stage. You might want to contact the ROM developers and ask if any adaptations could be made there in order to support Viber.

    up to now I have never had a problem on my iPhone 3G
    I go through my home wiFi
    my ISP is Vodaphone
    now I can’t actually open the Viber App
    the Viber screen opens as a blank screen then crashes out
    I have uninstalled and reinstalled
    no difference
    any ideas?

    I’m using the latest version of iPhone viber and ever since I started using viber I cant help notice annoying app locking/blocking on incoming or outgoing text messages. whenever a message comes or goes while I was on the messaging screen app gets unresponsive… :( cant you please make the message handler class run on a separate thread????
    plus as a feature req. could you please make it possible to sent or received pictures able to save on camera roll???

      About the bug you explained – I’m not sure I fully understand it… which incoming and outgoing messages are blocked? Viber or cellular ones?

      Please try to explain the problem again step-by-step.

      About your request – photos received on Viber *are* already saved to iPhone’s Camera Roll. This is the folder that opens up when you choose from Library, and this is where received photos are automatically saved.

        ok let me try to explain in detail;
        I’m using iPhone 4 btw. and I’m also an iOS dev.
        when I’m chatting with a friend by viber text message (maybe because its a very long chat I dont know) I’m typing a message if I receive a message app gets unresponsive for a moment (about a second) keyboard is not responding etc.
        I believe its because messages tableview gets its updates from the main thread or maybe you try to update whole tableview for every new message..?? that is if you are using a tableview to show message list but I think it is safe to assume you are using tableview or a scrollview, either way somethings blocking the process…

        thanx for the image saving info, I didn’t notice that :)

      Viber’s sound settings are affected by your iPhone’s.

      If you want Viber to be silent/low volume etc. – you should change your iPhone’s volume settings accordingly.

    Hi Viber Team, I recently keep receiving a friend AUTO viber call from Taiwan (in an interval of 15minutes) after we finish our conversation. The strange thing is that his iPhone4 is in locked screeen condition after our conversation and it will start auto calling me every after 15minutes interval, I can only hear background sound as it’s not an intended call. It will go on and on until he switched off/on his iPhone4 then this problem goes away, but a few days later, the problem re-surfaced again? By the way, I am using iPhone4S and both on iOS5.     Is everybody at Viber Media Inc. totally nuts or just planning to kill a fabulous app?
    Viber WAS the best app. ever and after upgrading thousands of fans of Viber complained and asked if the old version could be installed again.
    Some “robot” at Viber keeps giving the same answer (in short): although the newest version crashes all the time it’s the best one and if you have a iPhone 3G we’re sorry but don’t use Viber anymore, because your old fashioned and should spent some money on a new iPhone.
    Is this arrogancy or ignorancy?

      It is never a “robot” that’s answering users’ complaints and suggestions – these are real Viber representatives who are here to give users support. It is important to remember that in the constantly progressing technological world, our first priority is to first fully support the newest versions and hardware, in accordance with its percentage in the world. We never said we would neglect iPhone 3G users – on the contrary, we said that we will fix it, but that it will take a little more time.

      As we said before, the upcoming Viber 2.1.3 should address these issues and hopefully fix them. It should be released sometime this week, and we would love to get the feedback from you once you’ve installed 2.1.3

        It would be a good idea to warn Viber users before updating next time. Something like: only for IOS4 and IOS5 !
        I understand Viber has to support the newer versions also, but as we say: ‘Never throw old shoes away, before you have new onces’.
        The latest update was not a good marketingcampaign for Viber.
        I will install Viber 2.1.3 and hope I can use my favourite app. again.

          Well, we couldn’t tell what problems would arise to some of our users, because naturally our QA resources are limited and aren’t endless (our testing on iPhone 3G and iOS3 was actually successful, and only later we found that some of our users with these versions have problems).

          Naturally it was never our intention that our iOS3 users would feel neglected, of course not, but we had a different problem – we implemented a new, improved sound codec into the new Viber 2.1. This means that people with older versions than this (with the old codec) cannot communicate with 2.1+ users, so staying with the old version of Viber would very quickly because useless.

          We are aware of the inconvenience caused, but know that we are on it, and we hope to find a solution soon.

            I promised to reply after the update and today I installed Viber 2.1.3. and I’m really happy again. I already Vibert some of my contacts (looks if the sound is not as good as my original version, but doesn’t mind) and I’m totally content. The no.1 app. is back again!!!!

    hi, i’m using iphone 4 (recently upgraded os to os5) and just upgraded viber to the latest version on avail on appstore.

    after upgrade, my viber now doesn’t function properly. When i call, i can not hear the sound off my normal phone speaker unless i put on a headphone or turn it to loudspeaker mode. i already tried deleting and installing it again several times but same problems occur. any solutions to fix this problem?

    my viber started crashing today only on a one certain contact. after sending a message the contact “appeared” to be blocked .. i can’t open or receive any new message from it. (we’ve tried this..). is there a fix or it’s going to get better on its own?

      Also, try restarting your phones on both sides. Does it help?

        iphone 3g & iphone 4 with iOS4.0 both. we’ve updated, restarted…and we can send/receive message with any other viber-contact except for eachother’s. :/ when we try to open the conversation the screen just stand still and that’s it. we’ve tried sending a message and we have the preview displayed on screen when arrives… but still when clicking on it to open it the screen freezes. :/

          So what you’re basically saying is that essentially only the Message History page itself with that user is stuck, is that not so?

          We haven’t encountered a similar problem before from users. My suggestion to you could be:
          1. either to uninstall Viber, reinstall and try again (on both sides). Note that this would mean deletion of all of your Message History (with all of your contacts), but may solve your problem because you will start a message history with that contact from scratch.
          2. or to contact our support team at http://bit.ly/ukGVJ0 and elaborate on the problem. They may be able to provide you with further assistance.

      Please make sure neither you nor your friend are connected to networks that might be blocking Viber (for example – a router running a firewall).

      1. First, please try uninstalling and reinstalling Viber when connected to different WiFi networks.
      2. Also, please make sure the following ports are enabled on your routers:
      TCP: 5242 + 4244
      UDP: 5243 + 9785

      (if you are not sure how to enable ports, contact your router manufacturer)

    Hi, your system can store a single snapshot of the message in iphone/Apps/com.viber/Library/caches/Snapshots, so is it possible to store continuous snapshots of all the messages and thus provide a (slightly clumsy) way to backup messages until you come up with a better solution?

      It’s not that we don’t store chat history because we’re technologically incapable of doing so, but rather because it’s Privacy Policy commitment of ours not to.

      We plan to introduce an option to export/import chat history in the future, and once we have news on that, we’ll publish it on our Facebook page :)

    Hi, I updated my Viber app this morning (I have an iphone4). Everything was fine until i updated it but since then the messages I’ve sent say aren’t being delivered. They say ‘sent’ but not ‘delivered’.

    I only updated the app was because I received a message saying that a contact of mine had sent a photo to me and that i needed to update my app in order to receive it. But since updating, the picture hasn’t arrived.

    I’ve turned my phone on and off to try to fix things, but no joy. Do you have any suggestions about what is wrong or how to fix it? Is it a temporary glitch with Viber? If needs be, can i just go back to the old version of the app?

        Unfortunately, if the sender of this photo does not send the photo to you again, it won’t be able to arrive at your phone. Could you ask the sender to simply send the photo again?

          thanks for your response. yes, I asked the sender to email the image to me as it was quite urgent.

          On a separate note, a viber text message that was sent to me earlier today disappeared when i tried to open it. Basically i saw the little preview notification but there wasn’t a trace of it when i went into viber. From what i’ve read on the message boards this is a common problem since the new viber update. Is there any way of fixing it or retrieving the message (without asking for the sender to re-send it)?

    I’m running viber 2.1.2 on my Galaxy S (stock Samsung firmware, version 2.3.3) and I’m getting lots of force close messages for “google services framework” or “com.google.process.gapps”. it seems to happen whenever I try to open a contact or list them in viber. Also, I get lots of crashes back to the main viber menu when trying to compose a message.

    is there any way to fix this? I’m uninstalling viber because it’s causing general system instability and breaking functionality for other apps that depend on the “google services framework” service.

      Open Viber and find a person you know who has Viber in the “All” contact list. To reboot synchronization, change a digit, save and exit the contact list. Open contact again, change the digit back to the original, correct number, save and exit. Wait for approximately 10 minutes and see if the contact is now recognized as a Viber user.

      If this doesn’t work, please enter Viber’s DialPad and try to manually dial the number in its FULL format (including the “+” sign, the country code, area code, etc.)

      Lastly, please try connecting to a few different WiFi networks and test it again.

      If everything fails, please let me know what country you are located in, and which cellular network.

            We are aware of this issue (that some people with an older version of Viber still manage to use it), but unfortunately we suspect that the UAE authorities simply blocked Viber according to the new version. In other words – there’s still nothing we can do to help, and trying to offer workarounds for users in the UAE to bypass this block would be illegal in your country :(

        the problem is not linked to the size of photos, or a particular contacts; i am able to receive all photos from any contacts, but i noticed that i can only load photos from viber to my phone, by turning off and restarting my it! then, after having restarted, a new folder, named Viber pictures, is present in pictures folder. Is it necessary to restart each time the phone to update my pictures folder?

      This problem could have different sources, one of which is that your network might be blocking Viber’s ports.

      1. Please test Viber on both the cellular network, and a few different WiFI networks. Does the problem occur on all of them?
      2. Do you have other friends with Viber for whom it works just fine? are they on the same network as you?

      The two problems you are describing are unrelated.

      The first (about having to be inside the app) is related to the fact that you have an iPhone 3G that does not support multitasking. Please note that Viber officially supports only 3Gs and above.

      About the second problem – it could be that the internet network you are using is blocking Viber. What country are you located in? Did you try testing Viber on a few different WiFi networks in order to isolate the problem?

    I just upgraded to the newest version, running on an iPhone 4s iOS 5.0.1
    My issue is once I installed te upgrade I could see all my old messages for the first second when u open the app for the first time but then the activation code screen appears and after entering in my new code all the messages are deleted. Is there anyway to get my history back or somehow bypass the activation code request which results in my message deletion?

    Hello, I have viber on my iphone4… All was working fine, but today i dropped my phone and shattered the screen, so I think I’ll have to get a whole new phone. If so, is there any way that I can transfer all my existing viber messages (i.e. the entire messaging history) from the shattered phone to a new phone? Failing that, is there a way that I can save the message history online somehow, maybe when i sync the phone with itunes? Hopefully there is.

      This issue is due to an iPhone restriction, that 3rd-party applications cannot generate more than one vibration (unlike regular, cellular calls). Unfortunately there’s nothing that can be done to fix that at this stage :(

Viber used to work fine in my Iphone 3GS, then i switch to iphone 4S (iOS5) and its not working properly anymore. whenever i atyempt to make calls, it will show on the screen as Dialling, and then ringing but i cant hear anything on the phone. the recipient of the call says her device is ringing but i cannot hear anything, same thing goes when somebody calls me – i cannot receive incoming call. ive tried to unistall & install so many times but im stll receiving the same error. please help me. my fone is factory unlock and im wondring why i cant use it properly on iphne4S. hope for you immediate response. thank you.

        Hi thanks for your respons, sorry, first of all I forgot to tell you that I have a Sony-Erixsson Xpedia- Active. But what has happened is that since I installed Viber I get Vibers keyboard when ever I open a program or function where I need to write. Vibers keyboard has a lot of symbols in Chinese/Japanese etc is a little trickier to use AND it lacks three letters that are important when writing Swedish. So I would like to be able to get back to the keyboard that I’m used to whenever I’m not using Viber. I hope I was able to be a little clearer .

      In general, Viber should automatically save photos received through it in a designated folder.

      However, please note that Viber does not officially support Wildfire yet, and that’s because it’s quite a rare device. There are some internal problems in Wildfire that make it difficult for us to implement Viber’s voice engine, for example. We are doing our best to adapt Viber to more and more devices, and we hope to have good news soon.

    First, great application!

    Secondly, I am studying abroad so I am frequently traveling back and forth between countries. Every time I travel and want to switch my number, I have to deactivate (and lose history) to be able to activate it with my other number.

    I know that I could ask everyone in my phone book to add my number including the country code that I’m using in one country, and then stick to that number, but this will be difficult with new contacts and for other reasons.

    I am therefore asking if it’s possible to have two viber accounts activated at the same time on the same device and to make it simple, add in settings that all numbers in my contacts with this country code will be called with this account and so on.

    I am 99% sure that this is not possible, but is there a chance that this will be possible?

      It is possible, and we’re working on such a feature these days.

      However, as you described yourself, it is quite technologically complex, so we are not sure yet when exactly it will be ready. Once we have any news, we will publish it on our Facebook page :)

      Meanwhile, as you suggested, you might simply give all of your contacts worldwide one of the Viber numbers you decide to keep. Note that the Viber number does not have to correspond with your GSM card at any given point.

          Viber text messages and missed call notifications pend in our servers for 2 weeks if the destination user is offline. After that, they will not show up on the destination user’s Viber after he goes back online.

    I have just updated and wish i hadn’t! Messages (if they show) are out of order. Many are missing completely. They don’t show until I’ve sent a message, if I open the conversation, at first nothing shows. You’ve been saying for a YEAR that archiving/exporting week be added. I’d PAY if it was a premium option, I’m sure so would many others. PLEASE fix asap, or offer us an export function. Even if msgs were stored as text so we could find the file and copy it for archival purposes.

      What phone do you have exactly? is it an iPhone or Android?

      Basically, this is out of our jurisdiction, but as far as we know information stored on the computer from phones (for example – on iTunes) can only be accessed by the user who uploaded it, and not simply by any user on that same computer.

      Moreover, note that Viber’s “files” do not simply allow free public access, because they are hidden inside the app.

      In short – we wouldn’t worry much :)

      Unfortunately receiving a message with the older version you were using is not possible at all, so the message was never actually received on your phone.

      You will need to ask your friend to simply send you that picture again, now that both of you have the latest version :)

    i have tried several times to reinstall and that didnt help..they were saving automatically to ‘viber images’folder in gallery and yes the folder is still there and contains all photos saved previous to updating the software..

    I have a iphone 4s and like in london and my network is tmobile, i have used viber for a while but all a sudden my messages wasnt sending so i deleted the app and re downloaded it again but ever since i have deleted it my viber contacts are not showing up, it searches for my viber contacts then i recieve a pop up message saying i need a sufficent internet but i already have internet on my price plan and my network is always shows 3G. Please can you help me because its getting annoying

          We are suspecting these days that T-Mobile have blocked Viber on their 3G network a few weeks ago.

          We are trying to confirm this issue, but if this really is the case, then unfortunately there might not be anything that we (Viber) can do about it :(

            I have spoken to tmobile today and they said that they havent blocked viber, they refreshed my internet and told me to reset my phone and then wait for 15mins and then look into viber, and if that doesnt work i should delete the app and re install it and there shouldnt be a problem after that, which i have done exactly what theyve said but i have no luck its still not working, they told me not to use wi-fi internet because i allready have unlimited internet on my price plan, but i still need help.

            Also i remember i by accidently pressed “deactivate account” on the setting in viber, can this be the problem to all this faults? If this is the case how can i mend it back please help me…

    For blank screen errors, all you have to do is turn your phone off. Leave it for 30 seconds and turn it back on.
