Are the calls on Viber really free?

Just like on other VoIP concepts, the only thing you are paying is data bandwidth. If you are connected to Wi-Fi, it is free.
If you are using a 3G connection, the final price depends on your data plan.

During the call, Viber spends approx 500 KB per minute (250 up and 250 down). So, if you have a 250 MB data plan (which is one of the smallest), you can gain yourself up to 500 minutes for calls.

Sending a message uses less than 1 KB. With the 250 MB plan mentioned above, you can say that text messaging is indeed totally free, even on 3G.

But with new feature called Viber out, released in November 2013 in Viber 4.0 version (for iOS and Android users), you can call anyone, anywhere, even if they don’t have Viber. In that case, you have to buy credits and we can not say that ALL calls are totally free but Viber to Viber calls are always free. Read more about Viber out call rates…

  • BHein

I was reading 700 KB per minute is the data volume from a different source. Any comment/parameter?

    • ViberTeam

Viber uses about 0.5MB per minute of call. (0.25MB in, 0.25MB out).

  • valbo

What about SMS to +40744xxxxxx that appears is my bill, several times. Some friends have the same number in their bills too. Nobody says you have to pay for several SMS!?! Finally it is not free…..

    • ViberTeam

These charges have nothing to do with Viber.
Viber-to-Viber calls and texts, while both sides are connected to the internet, are absolutely free, and they will remain free all the time.

  • Danielle

If I am in America and I want to phone someone in Australia is it still free? Do i pay the roaming cost?

    • ViberTeam

Viber itself is a TOTALLY free service. However, payment for 3G internet usage (let alone roaming, when abroad) is determined by your cellular company, and this is something we (Viber) cannot control, nor benefit from.

Using Viber on WiFi, however, is free for sure.

  • colm kenny

what if i am on wifi in canada but my friend in ireland is not on wifi but is on 3G do i get charged
    for the call then

    • tole_car

No, you will not be charged for that.

      • ViberTeam

        @colm

Note that your friend in Ireland who is using 3G WILL be using his cellular data package. However, as Tole mentioned, you will be free of charge for sure (WiFi).

  • Fernando

How do I invite someone in another country.

    • tole_car

Just like you are inviting any other contact, by pressing the Invite to viber button. This feature sends a SMS and in your case it will be an international one. This SMS will be sent and charged by your mobile operator.
International SMS-s are usually little bit more expensive, but still much cheaper than international calls.

    • ViberTeam

You can either use Viber's invite feature and send the international SMS, or simply contact them through Facebook or email and tell them: "Hi, install Viber"

      :)

  • Ana

How Can I tell if my viber contacts are on WiFii? Without having to ask them.

    • ViberTeam

When you call them, if it says "Ringing…" this means they are connected to the internet (either 3G or WiFi) and their phone is actually ringing.

In future versions we will develop an easier way of knowing if the other side is online or not.

If I'm overseas, and logged into Viber, am I racking up 3g data charges in the background (with data roaming on/off)?

    • ViberTeam

Using Viber abroad, like any other internet application, would use up roaming 3G data (expensive usually).
To prevent this, make sure to turn your roaming off and use Viber only on WiFi. This way you ensure yourself that your calls/texts would be completely free.

  • TAra

My friend Is abroad and his data charges are £8 per mb! How many viber texts could he get for that? Trying to work out if it wil b cheaper to use viber on 3G roaming or just text normally and pay 50p a text

    • ViberTeam

Viber uses about 1KB per text message. So that's about 8000 messages for his 8MB.

Alternately, whenever he finds WiFi, he should use it. That ensures his calls and texts through Viber and completely free, for sure :)

  • Trevor

Hi, My UK mobile carrier Vodafone are asking me to pay £130 for a call I made (on my iPhone 3GS) to a friend of mine in Macau (China). I was on WIFI throughout the call and NEVER switched to GSM or even 3G. They are claiming that the call went through the SIM card (I.e. through Vodafone). Do you think my friend may have done something wrong or are they trying to scam me?
I've spoken to her through Viber in the past and never had any issues. Please help! Thanks

    • ViberTeam

      Hi Trevor,

If you were in the UK, using Viber on WiFi, then there is no way to charge you. If you made ABSOLUTELY sure that you were connected to WiFi, then the call did *NOT* go through your SIM card at all.
However, if you are not entirely sure the call was indeed on Viber, i.e it might have switched to GSM (Viber allows to switch the call to GSM, *after showing a warning message*, and the indication to that is the screen turning grey), then you’ll have to recheck their claims.

Please ask them for specific details: the time of the call, its duration, and the number you were calling. Do they have all those details? Once they give them to you, check them with your REGULAR (cellular) phone call logs on your iPhone.

  • Noemi

    Hello,
I would like to know what happens if I use Viber through GSM? I do not always have 3G around, so the data usage goes up if I use it through GSM? Or it stays the same and 3G is only important in the case of making calls to make them better, faster etc?

    Thanks,
    Noemi

    • ViberTeam

When you make a GSM call, it's actually not through Viber at all.

Viber can only make a call on 3G or WiFi. Making a call on WiFi doesn't use up data. Making a call on 3G does use your data – 0.5MB per minute of Viber call. Using Viber on GSM is actually not even a Viber call, as I explained. It's simply a regular cellular call – Viber simply lets you switch the call from Viber to cellular.

    Hi ViberTeam!

My son is in Rwanda and I have invited him to Viber and when he tried to install it, questions came up regarding his credit card information. They do not have cell phone/data plans available in Rwanda … just a pay-as-you-go system through either MTN or Tigo (carriers there). I suppose the credit card information takes care of the "what ifs" (extra data charges), as I've seen posted above. Is this a correct assumption?

Also, if this is legitimate … my son does not have a credit card. Could I use my credit card to cover this?

BTW we both have unlocked iPhones (purchased directly from the Apple store). I am on the Bell network in Canada and he is on the MTN network in Rwanda.

Thanks for addressing these issues for me.

    • ViberTeam

      Hi,

I must say that I don't really have answers for your questions, simply because Viber is not the one charging you for anything. Our application itself, the calls and the texts service we provide are ALL completely free. The questions you are asking regarding charging for data – cellular data or prepaid system – are all determined and all go to the local Rwandan company (MTN, as you said). It might be a good idea to contact them and ask.

At any rate – if there are no 3G networks in Rwanda, then the only way to begin with for using Viber on his iPhone is through a local WiFi network. If he uses Viber on WiFi, then in fact he doesn't have to worry about costs at all – it will be free for sure, not even having to have a SIM card or ANY cellular reception (except for just once when registering through Viber by receiving our SMS with code).

I hope I was clear and understood.

  • kat

    Hi,
Does having viber on in the background when abroad incur any charges if no calls/texts are made or received? I mean does having just the app on use data? I understand from the answers above that you get definitely charged for roaming when actually using the app to make calls/texts (if not on wifi) but how about having it just on in the background.
    Many thanks

    • ViberTeam

First, it's important to note that the charge you get for Roaming is strictly by your cellular company, not by us.

Regarding your question about Viber in the background – when idling, Viber still sends negligible amounts of data to our server called KeepAlives, needed to inform the server that you are available to receive calls/texts. Usually the charges for such amounts are tiny. However, you could potentially be charged for them if your Roaming plan with your cellular company says that you pay per "blocks of data", meaning even for very small amounts of data you will pay a minimum amount per minute, per hour, etc. Cellular companies earn quite a lot of money this way from users even if they didn't really use internet services per se.

For users with such plans we advise to simply turn Viber off completely (and not just run it in the background) when roaming abroad, and then turn it back on while on WiFi.

if i didnt have viber and this person in a different country, did will it cost? my roamin is free and i used 3G internet. wll i be free if i used my wifi instead of 3G network?

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

      No, it won’t be free.

Viber offers a free service (calls+texts) only between 2 users who have Viber installed and are connected to the internet. These 2 contacts can be anywhere in the world.

  • Mohammed zwail

What is the less speed can Viber work with?
I mean is speed of 128 kb/s can make viber call?!!

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

Viber uses about 0.5MB per minute (0.25 up, 0.25 down).
So that means about 8.5-9 KB/second.

      So you’re good :)

      Nope.

Using Viber on WiFi is completely free for you, for sure.

  • Tofuslim

    Hi Viber

Thank you the awesome apps. I have some questions regarding data…

Sending a message uses less than 1KB, but if I am on 3G and receiving a text message from viber then I use 1KB for receiving the message correct?

Same with receiving a call? If I am on 3G and somebody calls me on viber then I use 500 KB per minute?

    Thanks.

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

Correct. In reality, it’s usually less than 500KB per minute, but we wanted to give our users the maximum amounts just to be safe ;)

Soon it will be much less than 500KB per minute, because we’re improving our sound compression. Updates to come!

how to message people from overseas?

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

Add them to your contact list in the full format (including the “+” sign, the country code, area code, etc.)

Then go to text messages, choose them, and you’re ready to go :)

  • Tatz_NYC

Does the numbers you call or text come up on your monthly phone bill?

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

Viber itself is a TOTALLY free service. However, payment for 3G internet usage (let alone roaming, when abroad) is determined by your cellular company, and this is something we (Viber) cannot control, nor benefit from. Viber uses about 0.5MB per minute of call off your data plan and negligible amounts for texting.

Using Viber on WiFi, however, is free for sure.

Does Viber use 3G data when it is not being used ie. Just running in the background? Ive noticed the logo is always on in the notification bar. Is it using 3G data?

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

Viber uses negligible amounts of data when idling (less than 1KB a minute), so you shouldn’t worry about data usage when Viber is running in the background :)

  • Vin

my friend in india just dwn load viber app on his iphone. i don’t see him in my contact list or make a call to him using viber. am i doing something wrong? can come one help me with this.

    thanks
    vin

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

Open Viber and find a person you know who has Viber in the “All” contact list. To reboot synchronization, change a digit, save and exit the contact list. Open contact again, change the digit back to the original, correct number, save and exit. Wait for approximately 10 minutes and see if the contact is now recognized as a Viber user.

If this doesn’t work, please contact our support team at: http://helpme.viber.com and in the meantime you can use Viber’s DialPad to manually dial the number in its FULL format (including the “+” sign, the country code, area code, etc.)

  • Smile_its_free

Using Viber will contacts called and messaged come up in the bill? Yes or No?

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

Viber-to-Viber calls will not show up on your bill because they are placed through a separate system than the user’s cellular provider. The call log will only show on your phone.

do i need my sim card? because i dont use my iphone for a phone i have another phone but i would like to make phone calls with my iphone as well

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

Since the access code is sent to the telephone number which you’re registering, you must have this number activated in order to receive the access code (This can also be a temporary number, used only for the setup of Viber. e.g. phone card, etc.)
After the setup process you won’t need it anymore:)

  • Rebecca

I am totally new to all this technology but am loving this app so far. I understand there is data usage when making a phone call but I would like to query the data usage for receiving a phone call?

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

The bandwidth rate during a Viber call is equal for both ends and is approximately 240 KB per minute up and down, 14 MB per hour up and down.

  • EM

I.started using Viber today and I am really in love with it thx 4 it I. Want to ask a question if I m connected to.wifi calling a friend oversees on their phone would I pay for an international or national fees ?

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

      Not at all.
If you use Viber on WiFi, it’s completely free, no matter who you call or where they are.

      • Kadiak2382

What if i use a data plan or 3g? Will i be charged of viber?

        • http://www.viber.com Viber

If you have a flat rate (monthly pre-paid) on your 3G plan, then no – no charges at all.
If you pay-per-MB, then it depends on the rates of your 3G usage. Viber uses about 0.5MB per minute of call, and about 1KB per message, so you can calculate how much your cellular company charges you :)

      • EM

she doesn’t have wifi so I make a call from viber but to her cellular phone how much would that cost? she doesnt have viber. would it cost an international call cost or a national one?

        • http://www.viber.com Viber

You’re asking 2 different questions here..
          1. The person who is using WiFi never pays, no matter what the other person is connected to.
          2. The person who is connected to 3G uses his data plan when receiving or making a call on Viber (0.5MB per minute). If you are using 3G while you are abroad, you might be charged high rates for Roaming, but this is something we (Viber) have nothing to do with – it is a decision and charges made by the cellular companies themselves.

You need to verify this information with them. Viber itself is completely free.

  • Colin Whelan

I’ve never invented a tip before and probably most of you know this but anyway here goes…. I am overseas from Australia in London and using Viber. To make sure you are not being charged anything turn off your phone. Restart it but only enter your pin and dont unlock the sim. Connect to the wifi in maccas etc and you will be free of any worries that the phone company can charge you anything!!!!!!

  • Jennifer

I have been using Viber successfully for a few weeks now to call/text family in Australia from New Zealand. Love it! However last night I upgraded the app as required and now it won’t open. Just get the purple bar along the top of the screen for about 20 seconds and then it goes back to the phone’s main screen. Have tried uninstalling/reinstalling alot of times. Any suggestions?

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

      He Jennifer,
What iPhone do you have? Which version if iOS?
Also – is your iPhone jailbroken?

  • Shovan

i am calling my friend in india who has also got viber installed on the iphone. my question is when i am calling him (we both are in viber), will my friend incur any cost. will he has to be connected on the wifi. my friend hasn’t got 3g service.

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

Viber itself is a completely free service. What a user might get charged for us the internet usage. If you’re connected to WiFi – you can rest assured that no charges will apply. If you’re connected to 3G (no matter if you receive or make the call) – your cell company may charge you according to your data plan with them. Please consult with them if you intend to use Viber on 3G.

  • Pedro

Do you have any plans to introduce the option to pay for a call to non viber users like Fring Out and Skype has, rather than route the call through the cell network?

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

      Yep,
It’s a service we plan to introduce at some point, but we still don’t know exactly when it will be ready.

We recommend you to stay tuned for updates and news on our Facebook page.

  • Normski

Downloaded Viber app to my HTC HD. Received code in a text, seems to have skipped the activate with the code stage because contacts list shows viber users and I have rung one to test.
Why have I not had to activate?

  • Lorealkids1989

I downloaded viber and noticed that the call log from my viber account showed up on the regular call log on my phone. Then I freaked out because my day time minutes aren’t free until after 7 and I spent a long while talking to someone who also has the viber app earlier in the day. Is it normal for calls made on viber to show up on your regular call log? I hope I’m not charged, and those calls weren’t actually made using my phone itself instead of viber. :(

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

      Hi,
In Android, Viber’s calls are logged into the regular phone app just for convenience purposes – don’t worry :)
Calls made *between 2 Viber users* are absolutely free, so you shouldn’t worry about charges made by your cellular company.

  • David

Hi there, is there a way to prevent viber from automatically shifting to 3G when wifi is not available?
    Thanks, David

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

Unfortunately not at this stage. Viber itself doesn’t shift to 3G – Viber simply uses any internet connection that’s available in order to function, be it WiFi or 3G.

In the future we plan to add the option to choose whether to connect to 3G or not, but we still don’t know when it will be ready.

  • Leeck79

Oh so if I don’t exceed my data plan then viber is free for use?

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

Viber itself offers you a free service as long as you are connected to the internet – whether it’s 3G or WiFi it doesn’t matter.

So, as long as you are within your data plan, yes it will be free, but if you exceed it you will probably pay extra, but this payment goes to your cellular company.

      • suave

If i deleted my messages in vibrer, is there still a way to recover them?

        • http://www.viber.com Viber

          Unfortunately not :(
We don’t keep our users’ chat history in our servers, since we care about user privacy. We apologize, but we can’t help.

  • FuckinAnonymous

Viber wants access to my account info, the ability to change my passwords, the ability to make calls without my interruption, the ability to send texts without my interruption, etc etc.

Why do you need all this if all your using is data transfer? HMMMMM?! SCAM MUCH?

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

All of the permissions that Viber needs are strictly for functional purposes. Please compare these permissions to other popu;ar communication apps and services, and you will find no difference.

Also, please take a close look at our Privacy Policy, found on our homepage: http://www.viber.com/privacypolicy.html

There you will find our legal commitments to our users, including to *NOT* share information of users, *NOT* sell them, etc.

  • Dana

My dad always looks at my call log online on AT&Ts website and i just wanted to ask if these calls would show up on there? If so I cant use it :(

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

Viber calls are not logged as cellular calls, since they are made over the internet. So the only way to see your Viber call log is to actually look inside Viber ;)

  • Anon

I’d also like to know if these calls appear on the online phone records/bill?

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

Please see our response to Dana below.

  • Newyorksweetstories

i am using at&t pre-paid plan and when my friend called me on viber to viber, at&t charged me for the minutes used. how to resolve this? pls help!! otherwise, it is not free and actually it is costing more than regular minutes.

  • Newyorksweetstories

by the way, for the question i had posted below a few minutes ago, i do not have data plan with at&t, only talk time minutes. pls help

“i am using at&t pre-paid plan and when my friend called me on viber to viber, at&t charged me for the minutes used. how to resolve this? pls help!! otherwise, it is not free and actually it is costing more than regular minutes. “

    • Newyorksweetstories

ok. i have figured it out myself already. for anybody who would also like to know:

just pull the sim card out whenever i want to use the free call and push it back in when i am done.

      • http://www.viber.com Viber

        That’s actually not necessary.

We have found that some users get confused and accidentally make GSM (regular) calls instead of the free Viber calls. When you make a Viber call, make sure your screen stays purple (Viber) and does not turn grey (regular call). Sometimes the call is switched to a normal cellular call because your internet connection is disrupted or the destination contact is temporarily not recognized as a Viber user.

Viber prevents this confusion by popping up a message alerting the user that the call is switching to a regular, cellular call (thus costing money). The user has to accept it.

Remember that Viber-Viber call is always free as long as both sides have Viber installed and are connected to the internet. If you don’t have a 3G plan with AT&T (thus you’re not connected to the internet except when under WiFi coverage) – then it makes sense that you accidentally just had “regular” cellular calls.

        • Westblues

switching to gsm is especially annoying concerning international calls. i just brushed the button with my cheek and was calling a friend internationally. luckily she did not answer. is there a way of deactivating “switch to gsm”?

          • http://www.viber.com Viber

Unfortunately not. If you think about it, many mistakes could happen (not only inside Viber) that are caused due to accidentally tapping the wrong button. That’s the “price” we pay for having a touch smartphone, no? ;)

  • Cat

I was kind of confused though. I downloaded Viber for my IPOD TOUCH and when i sent a msg saying “Hey” to one of my friends it said i was going to be charged through my carrier? Im really scared so i deleted Viber because my mom will get mad if she has to pay!!!

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

You can never be charged through your cellular company when using Viber on your iPod Touch, since you must be using a WiFi connection to do so. The message you saw was generic, and it is only relevant for people with Viber on cellular phones who are trying to call or text contacts who don’t have Viber installed.

In short – you shouldn’t worry, and you can use Viber on your iPod freely :)

  • s2

Hi, i usually use viber via wifi to make a call. Lets say my friend is not in the wifi connection area, will he be charged on his 3g internet data usage?

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

Viber uses the internet like any other communication app out there ;)
Viber uses about 0.3MB per minute of call, and the charge is by your cellular company. You should check the rates with them.

  • Mvillafana8

Does it still charge if i have unlimited mins and its out of this californa is is completly free????????

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

Viber uses the internet, not your minutes of call.
So, if you have an unlimited data plan, then you can use Viber on 3G without any concerns. If you have a pay-as-you-go plan for 3G usage, then you need to find out with your cell provider how much you pay them (not us) per MB.

Using Viber on WiFi, however, is free for sure :)

  • Nate

I have viber installed on my iphone with unlimited data. Will it cost for me to call/text someone who does not have viber installed on their phone here in the United States?

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

When you try to call someone who does not have Viber installed, the call simply switches to be a regular, cellular call (through your cell company). It is no longer a call provided by Viber at all ;)

  • Lisal

hi im on viber since xmas day and im still getting charged for my texts, what the story with that, can anyone help me please??

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

Viber itself (including text messages) is completely free – there must be a different reason for this charge by your cellular provider.

Make sure you didn’t send regular text messages through Viber by accident.

  • hello

Hi! I got viber yesterday, and I just wonder. If i reseve a text while i am not connected to the internet will it then cost me money? I have free use of data on my phone, wil i then be charged extra for using viber?

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

Nope. If someone sends you a Viber text message and you’re not online, the message simply “waits” in our servers, and appears on your screen when you go back online :)

  • Booboo

When I enter my cell phone number, will they charge my phone? I am using viber on my iPod touch 4 gen

The SMS that is sent to you is a regular cellular SMS (the same as you would receive from a friend). There are no extra charges.

Till now, I did not face any problems communicating on viber for free.I have always been using GPRS network and never faced any problem till now. Although from yesterday i am facing this problem:
When ever I call any of my viber contact, I am not able to hear them , however the person on the other end is able to hear me clearly. Can you tel me why Ia m facing this problem?

      • http://www.viber.com Viber

        Hi Shrinid,

First, please note that Viber does not officially support GPRS (but only 3G and WiFi) – and that may be the source of the problem, even if it didn’t occur before.

        Now – please specify:
        1. What device do you have? Which version of operating system?
        2. What country are you located in? Which cellular network?
        3. Does this problem occur also on WiFi?

        • Shrinidhi90 Rai

My device is Samsung GT I9000. using Android Froyo.
I am located in India. My Cellular network is Airtel. And Ia m trying to make international calls to a person located in Bahrain.
Till now, I was never facing any problems. None of the parties have changed the cellular networks. The other person is using Wi-Fi at his end. While I am using GPRS. I have never tried on Wi-fi. Please advice.

          • http://www.viber.com Viber

Then please try it out on WiFi, as we suggested. Knowing the situation on WiFi will help us determine the source of the issue.

  • Rcky_guzman

if i call someone using viber that lives in the Uk and have the o2 network will they get charged for the phone call?

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

ViberViber itself is a TOTALLY free service. However, payment for 3G internet usage (let alone roaming, when abroad) is determined by your cellular company, and this is something we (Viber) cannot control, nor benefit from. Viber uses about 0.3MB per minute of call off your data plan and negligible amounts for texting.

Using Viber on WiFi, however, is free for sure.

  • mj

Hi I am here in USA and my family is back home in the Philippines, would it cost them still when I call using viber? thanks….

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

Viber itself (the app and the service) TOTALLY free.

Since Viber uses the internet to function, either side of the conversation must be connected to either WiFi or 3G. If it’s WiFi – that user is not paying anything for sure. If it’s 3G, the user *may* be paying his cellular company for the data (Viber uses 0.3MB per minute of call), but that depends on the specific data plan that they have with their cellular company, and needs to be verified with them.

  • Antral

Somehow you’re not answering some questions directly… IF someone called ME or TEXTed ME through viber and i’m not connected to the internet, would I incur charges from my carrier if I receive it?

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

When have we answered you indirectly? :)

The answer to your question is no – you will not be charged.
If someone sends you a VIBER text message and you’re offline, the message will simply pend in our servers until you go back online, and you will then receive it.

  • Usamarsalan

Do the calls made by viber to someone that has viber show up on your phone bill at the end of the month as a call? or do all calls stay within the app?

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

Viber itself (the app and the service) TOTALLY free – meaning we (Viber) don’t charge anything from you.

Since Viber uses the internet to function, both sides of the conversation must be connected to either WiFi or 3G. If a user is connected to WiFi – that user is not paying anything for sure. I have minutes on my phone and I don’t want to use them up so I downloaded this app and I’m wondering if this app won’t use up my minutes ?!

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

Viber doesn’t use “cellular minutes”, it only uses the internet.

I only have 50 monthly minutes so if I call someone who does not have viber with viber will it charge on my 50 minutes. Also I will be calling over wifi.

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

Viber provides free calls and texts only to other Viber users. If you try to call someone who does not have Viber, the calls witches to be a regular, cellular call (through your cellular provider).

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

      No,
Viber call records do not appear in your cellular bills, since the calls are made over the internet, and are free.

Hey what are the numbers I need to put in to ring nz? Quickly please

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

Go to Viber’s DialPad, dial the “+” sign (by holding the “zero” key for a few seconds), then 64 (new zealand’s country code), then the number of the person without the initial “0”.

      this means: +64-xxxxxxxx

    Hiya,

I’m using viber for few months now. I’m hearing that viber is completely free but for some reason my network provider (On the bill it comes up as I have used the internet, but I do not use internet through my phone, so viber is my concern) charges me. I am using viber through my Ipod touch. I text only few people who have viber app too.

Why does viber charge me when it’s completely free?

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

Viber doesn’t charge anyone – it is completely free, as you mentioned.
Moreover – text messages sent through your iPod can not even be charged, since iPods are connected to WiFi – it doesn’t even go on the cellular network, so the fact that your carrier charged you for that is strange.

Please contact them and verify these details with them – once we have their full official response, let us know.

  • Chikkaeleven

hi how do i know if viber uses wifi or my data plan?

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

If you’re connected to 3G, Viber uses your data plan.
If you’re connected to WiFi, then it uses WiFi – thus not your data plan :)

You need to look at your phone. Your phone displays whether you’re connected to WiFi or 3G.

  • Dean

hi,use the data usage for calls the same for a local call and international call? or does international calls use more data?

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

The same amount of data is being used whether you call domestic or abroad. However, note that the charge for this data may be different if you are located in your home country or using 3G when Roaming abroad. This issue needs to be verified with your cellular company, not us.

  • Deano

I recently downloaded and installed Viber on a phone which has no SMS or voice calling plans currently connected. If the SMS confirmation message comes through my regular providers SMS plan then how is it possible for me to set Viber up? I considered giving it my home telephone number but then my viber ID number would be that instead of my old cellphone number. How can i register viber without having actice SMS service on my phone and without compromising my home number (which i do not give out)?

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

Unfortunately, at this stage Viber requires a working telephone number to receive our SMS or automated call with the code. Without it, Viber cannot be registered.

So, you’ll have to find *some* “real” number that could receive the SMS/call and that will be your Viber identity, as you mentioned.

  • Sanda

How much data exactly does Viber use if I leave it running in the background?

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

Viber uses about 0.25MB per minute of call.

When running in the background, Viber uses very small amounts of data (about 1KB per minute).

I am still facing problems to call on Viber to a Viber person staying in Bahrain. Although I am using 3g plan while the other person is usign Wi-fi, still I am not able to listen the voice of the person on the other end while the other person is able to hear my voice clearly, Moreover this problem is faced only in international calls. In domestic calls, I am not facing any problem.
Can there be a chance of Viber being blocked in Bahrain?

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

      This is certainly an option.

Another option is that specifically the WiFi network he is using is blocking Viber’s ports one-way.

      Please instruct your friend to:

      1. Try uninstalling and reinstalling Viber when connected to different WiFi networks. Does it work now?
      2. Make sure the following ports are enabled on his router or firewall:
      TCP: 5242 + 4244
      UDP: 5243 + 9785

(if he is not sure how to enable ports, he should contact his router manufacturer)

Calls made on Viber appear on My regular call log… Is there a reason why and will it show up on the bill?

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

We assume you’re using an Android, right?
This is normal and expected behavior of the app. Even though the calls show up inside your regular call log, they will not be charged, since they were made over the internet.

In the future we will probably add a feature to separate both these logs.

      • Lola

Ok thanks a lot. It really freaked me out since I am using Viber to speak to someone I’m not supposed to speak to at innapropriate times :) Great app by the way and thanks again lol

if i have verizon will the call through viber be on my bill?

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

Viber calls (calls made between 2 Viber users, who are connected to the internet) are made over the internet network, and not through the regular cellular network. Hence, you will not be charged for them :)

Viber provides a completely free service.

  • Lars-Henrik Øverland

    I have a iPhone 4S.
    1:
Is it possible for me to turn off Viber’s ability to use other networks than WiFi? Easily? (To prevent switching and thereby expensive calls) Lost calls = no problem.

    2:
When I’m in Spain the dataplan gets really expensive, are there things I need to know about Viber as datatransfere in standby mode and so on.
I have seen somewhere that Viber uses 1kb pr min even when not in use, that means about 200$ every 5 month when not in a Free WiFi zone.

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

      Hi Lars,

Yes, when idling, Viber uses about 1KB per minute of call in order to synchronize with our servers. However, you can prevent this by choosing to exit Viber through the “More” tab. This means it doesn’t consume any data at all, and will only “wake up” upon events (text messages & calls). Of course, you can choose not to receive calls when you are connected to 3G.

Unfortunately the option of turning off Viber only on 3G does not exist yet. We are considering to add it in future versions, and if we have any news on that, we’ll publish it on our Facebook page :)

  • bill

If using the Android phone on Verizon will the calls appear on my account summary even though im not being billed? becase a similiar problem occured with skype where the calls appeared on my account summary. thanks

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

Yes, Viber calls appear in your normal call log (on Android devices), but they are not billed, since they are made over the internet, as opposed to your regular calls that are made over the regular cellular network.

In the future we might separate these logs for the users’ convenience :)

If I connect with wifi, will it turn on itself?(with the cellular data off)

Viber needs an internet connection in order to work. If you turn off your 3G data, Viber will not be available. However, when you connect to WiFi, Viber will automatically connect and become available.

Im with telstra prepaid, HTC wildfire S. I can only use Viber when im connected to wifi. When i turn off the wifi, i cant call or text anybody. Yep, Viber can be used anywhere in the world, as long as you have a working internet connection.

Note that due to potentially high Roaming charges for 3G network usage abroad (this is not related to Viber, but rather to your cellular provider), it is advisable that you use Viber on WiFi :)

I used Viber when my phone was in Roaming in Turkey to call international though home wireless router internet in the USA . The whole time my call was in Viber window and the only time i clicked the normal call was to hear a miss call , after which i was having a 30 minutes Viber conversation which was being charged from the Turkish mobile operator as a roaming call made from my phone with start and end. Could you explane me how is this possible being charged for a roaming long distance call , while my call was the whole time only Viber , moreover the oposite side took the call in Viber and not normal network too ?!

    • Anna Bulgaria

My phone is Sonny Erricson Experia X8 if it matters somehow ! My phone provider is Globul Bulgaria !

      • http://www.viber.com Viber

        Hi Anna,

We have found that some users get confused and accidentally make GSM (regular) calls instead of the free Viber calls. When you make a Viber call, make sure your screen stays purple (Viber) and does not turn grey (regular call). Sometimes the call is switched to a normal cellular call because your internet connection is disrupted or the destination contact is temporarily not recognized as a Viber user.

Viber prevents this confusion by popping up a message alerting the user that the call is switching to a regular, cellular call (thus costing money). The user has to accept it.

        • Anna Bulgaria

I can tottally assure you the whole call was in PURPLE screen and I was not confused , moreover the call from the oposite side was taken in the same purple screen , this is why I am asking you what do you think would be the reason the phone call to be charged as normal one in roaming !

          • http://www.viber.com Viber

If the call was indeed a Viber call (purple screen on both sides) and you are sure of it, then it couldn’t have possibly been charged as a normal CELLULAR call. What might have happened is that either side (or both) of the Viber conversation was connected to Roaming 3G internet (instead of a local, free WiFi network). In that case, it is known that the cellular providers charge very high rates for Roaming data. Again, this has nothing to do with us (Viber) at all, and that is something that needs to be verified with the cellular company themselves.

          • Anna Bulgaria

I was looking at the purple screen for 30 min while having the conversation , as the oposite side did ! Next my phone bill had the conversation in the print with the number I was having the viber call and the phone provider charged me for it 150 $!

          • http://www.viber.com/ Viber

            Hi again Anna,

I have been using Viber for over 12 months with no problems however yesterday when I received a call my phone only vibrated there was no sound even though the phone was not on silent. I then received a GSM call which was quite loud. Is there a setting or something I can do to fix this as I have received 4 more Viber calls & all but one were silent

  • Jessica

I was wondering if I have unlimited wifi will it cost extra money on top of the internet bill?

    • Jessica

Also do my messages and calls come up on the bill?

Will it say you have used viber and what you have said in your messages?

      • http://www.viber.com Viber

If you are using Viber on WiFi, the calls and texts are absolutely free, and will not show up on your internet bill :)

This is, of course, assuming you pre-pay your Internet Provider for the whole period of time (and not “pay-per-use”).

I have an android and the person whom im trying to call through the viber app has a blackberry cellphone. When I try calling it says that currently this user cannot be called through viber. How can I fix this?

I didn’t quite understand the policy regarding charging for international calls. Say I’m in America and have Viber and I want to call a mobile phone in Bangladesh that doesn’t have Viber; I will be connecting over the internet but the receiving mobile won’t. If I do, will my phone company charge extra from me because the other end isn’t connecting over the internet? Thanks!

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

Viber provides its free service (calling + messaging) only between 2 users who have Viber installed. When trying to use Viber to call a non-Viber user, the call will simply switch to be a regular, cellular call.

I am in Toronto, Canada. Samsung S2 galaxy.. on 3g plan (prepaid internet). When on wifi – I can use viber with no issues. As soon as I move to my my 3g – viber will not work? Help.. I contacted my provider, Rogers, and they stated that they had nothing to do with that. Help

    • http://www.viber.com/ Viber

Some mobile operators across the world block Viber on their 3G network. Usually this happens when users have a “simple” data plan (or a prepaid contract), meaning they didn’t pay extra for using VoIP on their 3G network.

In order to verify this, we recommend to contact your cell company and confirm this with them.

Can I use viber calls on an iphone without sim card (wi-fi only)? the application is already on the iphone. Would my registered phone receive the data charges?

    • http://www.viber.com/ Viber

Yes, after registering, Viber does not need a SIM card in the phone in order to work (so using Viber on WiFi is certainly an option).

When using Viber on WiFi, you will have no charges at all :)

Hi, I used Viper to make a call and now my servicer (Sprint) has changed me for the long distance call @ 1.97 cents a minute…ouch! Not a happy Viper user at the moment. What happen? Can someone please let me understand how to avoid this in the future. This is very disappointing and upsetting. When
I inquired with sprint, they told me to consult with Viber, perhaps, something happened that day where the call was routed through Sprint and not Viper. I was also told that I am using Viper at my own risk and suggest not to use it. Help, somebody…anybody. Thx

Viber itself is totally free, meaning we (Viber) don’t charge anything from you.

Since Viber uses the internet, both sides of the conversation must be connected to either WiFi or 3G. If a user is connected to WiFi – that user is not paying anything for sure. If the user is connected to 3G, the user *may* be paying his cell company for the data (about 0.3MB per minute of call), but that depends on the specific data plan that he has with his cellular company, and needs to be verified with them.

I’m wireless MSc student in UK, I’ve a research topic about whats Viber profit from providing such a free service. Some Operators are blocking this service as it’s decreasing their voice traffic, so it might not be very desirable for Operators.
Would you please kindly providing me clues, reasons, anything that can help me toward a reasonable conclusion?
    Tnx

      Hi there,

Currently, Viber’s focus is on adding platforms, features and integrating with more platforms, as well as improving overall system performance. At the same time, we are working on additional premium services that will generate revenue once they become available. The basic Viber service – Viber-to-Viber phone calls and text messages – will ALWAYS be free.

I am living in Canada and am using Samsung s3 from rogers, i have wifi both at home and at work, i also have 150 MB data. I made an international call through viber yesterday at work (i turned my data off, and connected to wifi) however my usage shows i have 20 mins long distance. May I know why?

When you make a Viber call, make sure your screen stays purple (Viber) and does not switch to the regular calling screen of your phone (meaning – a cellular call). Sometimes the call is switched to a normal cellular call because your internet connection is disrupted or the destination contact is temporarily not recognized as a Viber user.

When this happens, a message pops up alerting the user that the call is switching to a regular, cellular call (thus costing money). The user has to accept it to continue the call.

OK. Here’s the deal. I started using viber just recently to connect with a family member abroad. I live in the United States. The other person has viber too. Sometimes i make calls using viber. And I always use wifi but if the wifi gets disconnected I have 4G. However when I got my phone bill, you have charged me 70 dollars each for 2 calls. Viber, this is false advertising.

Hi I will be travelling to Singapore shortly , I have read all these comments and just want to clarify what is the best mode to place an Iphone 4 in to assure free calls , if I select airplane mode and turn wi fi on is this the best way to avoid any possibility of being charged roaming fees from Optus ( Australia )

    • http://www.viber.com/ Viber

      Yep,

If you only use WiFi, Viber will be free for sure.

“I thought VIBER was free, but after using it several times,
I found out that AT&T has charged me for all those calls to Belgium
      and Germany!!
Can someone tell me what’s going on or what I have done wrong? “

I just happened to find some other people on the Net
complaining about the same problem. Then, I read some comments from the people
working at VIBER. Here’s what they kept replying to some people: “Since Viber uses the internet, both sides of
the conversation must be connected to either WiFi or 3G. If a user is connected
to WiFi – that user is not paying anything for sure”.

      I am sorry Viber
Folks, but this is not true. I have always used WIFI and turned off my DATA
from day one while I was using Viber, yet I was quite shocked when I saw my
      AT&T bill for over $300!!! SO what’s
the story? Either the VIBER Folks don’t know what they are talking about or they
      are deceiving everybody!!!

Also, when VIBER says that in the middle of the talk, they
send us a message saying if we continue we will be charged, this is not true
either. I have tried everything, but I came to the conclusion that VIBER is not
a reliable service at all. They need to shut it down for a while, work on these
glitches, fix all of them, let their own people try it, and then announce it in
an honest manner. They should also leave a phone number so we don’t have to
spend a lot of time trying to figure out how to complain to these people!!!

Viber is blocked (ports) on the WiFi at work (i’m allowed to use the WiFi on my phone), but works perfectly fine on my mobile data usage. Is there any way to set only Viber’s usage priority to mobile data while staying connected to the WiFi? Perhaps the developers may add an option for ‘connectivity priority’ for problems like this. Or is there already an existing solution to this? It may be an uncommon problem, i guess.

    • Nemo

      P.S. I use a Sony Xperia P

      • http://www.viber.com/ Viber

        @Nemo –

        Unfortunately not.
This is not something that can be tweaked with Viber. It is something that needs to be done on the phone itself, and so unfortunately we (Viber) can’t help here :(

  • Wibbly Wobbly

Viber desperately needs an option to disable operation on 3G for those that have low allowances on 3G pans or pay by the KB on 3G. The workarounds are a kluge requiring too much user interaction to be really useful. This will avoid the 1KB/min – 1.44MB/day charges for doing nothing useful for the user except using their allowance and burning battery sending the data.

For many I suspect, the use model of having Viber automatically wake up when on WiFi and go to sleep when not would increase usage of the app overall and stop all these kind of complaints. Not everyone gets ‘free’ 3G even on their home network and not being able run Viber in a WiFi only mode makes your ‘Viber is free’ statement misleading for users. There’s no charge from Viber, but there IS a cost to the user.

For some it’s better to have regular calls when WiFi isn’t available!! Viber needs to respect this, and be able to deal with it automatically.

Disappointed not to see this feature in the latest version (Android).
Need a ‘Do not use 3G connection’ option. You do it forphotos and videos. You need to do it for calls too.

    • http://www.viber.com/ Viber

      Hi there,

Thank you for your feedback – we highly appreciate it.

We actually have added a new feature, allowing you to avoid saving media automatically when connecting to 3G (exactly because of this reason – so you won’t use up your data allowance).

About calls – well, it is after all your choice whether or not to accept incoming Viber calls, according to whether or not you’re connected to 3G at that moment.

Meanwhile, we invite you to enter our Feature Request page and post your suggestion there, or join an existing similar suggestion (it’s very easy and quick!). The more people join on a request, the faster it will become reality :)

You can find it here: http://helpme.viber.com/Knowledgebase/Article/View/43/0/have-an-idea-for-a-new-feature

      • Wibbly Wobbly

I added it to the feature request page.

Your work arounds don’t avoid the 1.44MB/day background data useage, And to have to manually reject calls when not on WiFi is exactly what I want Viber to do on its own – after all it DOES know when it’s not on WiFi! Why should i as the user have repeatedly be interrupted to reject calls I always want to reject?

        • http://www.viber.com/ Viber

You are right – technologically, it is not an impossible task to implement the options you mentioned into our app. However, please bear in mind that you are not the only user who requests features from us among our millions of users worldwide
Aside from that, we also have other projects running in our company, like Viber on whole new platforms, for example.

All of the above doesn’t mean we neglect our users’ requests. Adding the features you mentioned is certainly on our list of development, but we still haven’t had the time to fully develop them and/or test them thoroughly before releasing.

We apologize for the temporary inconvenience, and we hope to complete these features and implement them soon. We’ll certainly keep you posted with news :)

          • Wibbly Wobbly

That’s fine. My comments are/were only to try and persuade you of the value of adding this feature ahead of others. Of course there are many users and requests :)

    • http://www.viber.com/ Viber

      Hi,

In order to dial/save an international number, you need to add + in the beginning, then 44 (UK’s country code), then the local British number, without the “0” in the beginning. e.g +44712345678

      Does it work now?

    • Nik

They may have registered a different mobile number when they set up viber. I had a problem when I was trying to add my friend who went on holiday abroad. He bought & was using a local sim card but I could not connect until I used his UK number (although he did not take his UK sim card with him).

i am using sony xperia s and while using viber, the sound is hardly heard and vice versa.. please fix it. thanks in advance

    • http://www.viber.com/ Viber

      Hi,

Sometimes 3G reception could be low, and this is something we cannot control. Naturally this affects Viber’s call quality and results in disruptions and broken sound.
We are continuously trying to improve our handling of 3G, so you can expect better performance as newer versions of Viber are released.

Meanwhile, WiFi- WiFi calls on Viber should generally be very clear and are free of such disruptions (we recommend to test Viber when both users test a few different WiFi networks, in order to determine the source of the problem).

  • Leanne

I have just got back to UK form Mexico where I was using Viber to make calls the whole time. My data roaming, 3G etc was all switched off for the entire time and when I was using viber, I was always checking the screen to see that it was still ‘purple’ and had not notified me that it had switched to a regular call. As I landed at Gatwick yesterday, I had an email from my provider o2 that I been charged an extra £100 on top of my already high bill for calling while abroad?!! Like I said, my data roaming etc was switched off, the hotel had free wifi and I had no indication/change of colour screen/notification that I was not using viber. Could you tell me how this is possible?!!

    • http://www.viber.com/ Viber

      Hi Leanne,

Viber itself is totally free, meaning we (Viber) don’t charge anything from you.

Since Viber uses the internet, both sides of the conversation must be connected to either WiFi or 3G. If a user is connected to WiFi – that user is not paying anything for sure. • Leanne

You haven’t answered my question whatsoever?! I was in Mexico with all my 3G/data roaming etc switched off!! So try reading my question again and answering it properly without using your ‘script’. Because from where I’m standing, I have used your app exactly how you say to use it, again, read my original comment/question, and I have still been charged, not my fault. So who is accountable?!

        • http://www.viber.com/ Viber

          Leanne,

We have read your question thoroughly, this is not a ‘script’ or a ‘robot’ :) We apologize if it sounded like that.

Our main point was to emphasize that we (Viber), as a company, do not and cannot charge anything, so the bill you saw did not end up in our company.

We recommend that you contact your mobile carrier and demand to see what you were charged for exactly – amounts, times, etc.
This will help understand what action was taken that resulted in the high bill.

If after you have this information you still suspect it is Viber, then we kindly ask that you contact our Support Team and give them as much of this information as possible. They will assist you further for any question/doubt you may have.

Hi, at the moment Im abroad (in the UK) and I cant send a message or give a call. Im connected through WiFi. Do you have any idea why? Thanks

    • http://www.viber.com/ Viber

      Hi,

It could be that the network you are connected to is blocking Viber’s traffic (it is quite common in hotel networks, for example).

      1. First, please try uninstalling and reinstalling Viber when connecting to a few different WiFi networks (in order to pinpoint the source of the problem). What are the results?
      2. Also, please make sure the following ports are enabled (“forwarded”) on your routers or firewalls:
      TCP: 5242 + 4244
      UDP: 5243 + 9785

(if you are not sure how to enable ports, you may contact your router manufacturer or your Internet Service Provider)

      • DD

        Hi,

I assume the network is not blocking the Viber because my colleagues using Viber through WiFi without any problem. So I tried Viber at work and also in hotel and it doesnt work only at work.

I installed Viber on my laptop so the problem is more or less solved.

    • http://www.viber.com/ Viber

      Hi Kyle,

Viber requires a stable internet connection, whether it be 3G, 4G, Wi-Fi or some combination of these.

So long as the user in the Philippines that you are calling is a Viber user, you will not incur any charges from Viber. As long as you have a sufficient data package or are connected to Wi-Fi, you will not incur charges. However, we encourage you to check your data limits with your phone and internet carriers.

    Hey Viber!

I am an Australian, and I make Viber calls to Canada and the USA. What I want to know is, I know that I get charged or lose data from my internet plan – and I’m fine with that – but does the recipient lose any of THEIR data plan? I want to contact them, but I don’t want them to pay in any way for the service… And that is with both Viber Out contacts and Viber Member Contacts as well… T.I.A. – and apologies if you have already answered this a million times!

    • http://www.viber.com/ Viber

      Hi!

If the contact that you are calling is a Viber user, he or she will need a stable internet connection. This will require that they use Wi-Fi and/or data from their data plan. They will need to check with their internet provider for more information on their data limit.

As far as Viber Out calls go, the contact will receive your call as a regular phone call. This might cut into the minutes allotted in their phone plan, so they will need to check with their phone service provider.

  • Dan

Is there any way to send texts and make calls while in Europe and not see all of my text messages from the US, only open/see the important ones? I need to be able to use my cell phone in Europe but don’t need to see most of the many texts I get from work each day.

    • http://www.viber.com/ Viber

      Hi Ginny,

You can mute group chats by doing the following:
      1. Enter the group that you do not want notifications from
      2. Select the gear icon
      3. Check the box next to Mute Group

You will still see the number of unread messages when you open Viber, but you will not be notified of incoming messages.

My wife and are both on viber and we live in the USA. She went to Cameroon, we never tool no roaming plan, I was the one calling her from the USA using wifi connection. Suprise AT&T has charged more than 600 dollars. What can we do.

    • http://www.viber.com/ Viber

      Hi JM,

Viber-to-Viber calls are free, so you should not have received any charges from Viber.

Please contact AT&T for more information on the charges that were accrued.

What is Viber in? Is there a charge for incoming calls on Viber from non-viber phones?

    • http://www.viber.com/ Viber

      Hi,

Viber In is a service that allows you to transfer regular GSM calls to Viber calls.

There is no charge for Viber In calls for you or for non-Viber phones.

  • Anirudh

    Hi,
Can I call an Indian landline or mobile phone number using Viber Out from my US mobile phone if only I (caller) have internet connection and the receiver doesn’t. If yes, will I only be charged Viber credits and nothing else?

    Thanks

    • http://www.viber.com/ Viber

      Hi Anirudh,

The person that you are calling does not need to have an internet connection, but he does need a GSM signal (to be able to receive phone calls). You, as the caller, need an internet connection.

Only your Viber Out credit will be charged by Viber.

1)in android phone, I see viber use a lot of background data. what is actually transmitted in the background? and if I restricted background data, will viber still work or what is the impact to it?

    • http://www.viber.com/ Viber

      Hey Vince,

Viber running in the background means that you are able to receive up-to-date notifications. Turning off background data on your phone will not give you any alerts of incoming messages or calls. Unless you have the application open, you will not get any notifications from Viber if the background data is off.

I use Viber to call my girlfriend in Australia from UK. We both have Viber and generally (90%) of the time we have wifi connections. The calls dot last all that long as we use skype for long chats, yet I have received some astronomical bills. I have never exceeded my data allowance so even if we called without wifi this cannot have been the cause.

Can you shed any light please? Does Viber out get charged through network as well as credit? How do I ensure I am making a Viber to Viber free call?

    • http://www.viber.com/ Viber

      Hi Richard,

We’re happy to hear that you and your girlfriend are able to stay in contact!

Viber offers free Viber-to-Viber calls and messaging. We do not bill our users through service providers. If you believe you have been charged for calls made by Viber, you can contact our support team for more information by opening a support ticket here: http://bit.ly/1aOwGy2

What will happen to my viber call if i receive call from GSM to my phone, while talking on Viber

    • http://www.viber.com/ Viber

      Hi,

If you receive a GSM call while you are in a Viber call, the GSM call will place your Viber call on hold until the GSM call has ended.

    Hi,

I have a Samsung S4 and I have recently installed Viber on my phone. It was working fine but now whenever I recieve a regular SMS the Viber tone rings rather than my Samsung tone. Since installing Viber I also don’t recieve any notifications for my regular incoming SMS, only the Viber ringtone plays (even though the SMS has not been sent to Viber). Please help! I have missed a lot of important messages due to this problem :(

    • http://www.viber.com/ Viber

      Hi Jenny,

You can disable the specific Viber alerts by doing the following:
      1. Enter the More Options menu
      2. Go to Settings
      3. Choose Notifications
      4. Check the box next to Use system sounds

It also sounds as though you have the Free reply with Viber option enabled, which is why your SMS messages are coming through Viber. You can disable this message in the Settings menu as well.

      • Jenny

Thanks for the reply! Hopefully it works :)

Hi! I can’t make a call on viber because it comes up saying viber out calls. Buy credits. How do I get out of viber out calls??

    • http://www.viber.com/ Viber

      Hi,

In order to place a free Viber call, the contact that you are trying to call must be a Viber user.

If you are calling someone that does not have Viber installed, you will need to purchase Viber Out credits.

If you know that this user has Viber installed but you are still being prompted to buy Viber Out credit, please read this article: http://bit.ly/1jLF5M0 on contact list sync issues.

      • Helena

        Thanks problem solved!!!!

Hii I Am User Of Viber From Few Months. But I See I Just Call From Idea (3G)Network,Viber Take To Much Data..I Use Viber Just Only For 2mins And My Data Deductes 8Mb,Is It Fair?

    • http://www.viber.com/ Viber

      Hi Ashish,

Data usage in calls is difficult to measure as each voice call consumes a different amount of data. In each call, your voice is transmitted and converted into digital data before it reaches the other end. Data usage is then determined by how much voice is transmitted and at what frequency. Generally speaking, it is around 500kb/minute for each user in the call, but this will vary based on the aforementioned.

I have viber on my mobile phone, would like to call from USA to Germany (my friend doesn’t have viber). Should I dial 011 49… or
+49 …? What about calling on her landline

    • http://www.viber.com/ Viber

      Hi Diana,

For both her cell phone and her landline, you must dial her number in this format: +Country Code – Area Code – Phone Number, so you should dial +49….

  • GeorgeK

Hey guys, I’m in Ireland experiencing an ongoing issue in contacting a friend in Australia. When I call her it rings at my end but nothing happens at hers. The same happens in the other direction with the added complication at her end where she gets an intermittent notification that my number is “invalid” when she dials me. However, if she tries again she’ll hear ringing but I’ll receive no notification. No ringing, no message on screen, no call notification whatsoever. We’ve both uninstalled and reinstalled the app but no joy. I’m on android with meteor in Ireland, I need to get her tech info but can you think of any obvious mistakes we’re making? We’re ensuring we use country codes etc.

    Thanks in advance

    Hi
If I get a message coming from someone in France with wifi and I’m in Canada and I’m not connected to wifi, will the message appear to my phone (and my data plan) as if it came overseas from France? Or will it appear like coming from a local sender in Canada?

    Thanks!

    • http://www.viber.com/ Viber

      Hi,

The message will come from the phone number that sent it. If the user has a French phone number, the message will be shown as coming from that number.

If you are not connected to Wi-Fi, you will not receive that message until you re-connect to Wi-Fi.

Additionally, Viber messages and calls will not show up on your data plan, as they are not connected to GSM calls.

  • Newbie

    Hi,
First off, thank you for a great product!

I am making loads of unwanted calls through Viber, by accidentally hitting the call button (iPhone 4).
Is there any way I can turn off outgoing calls to spare me from this “massive problem” ? :)

    • http://www.viber.com/ Viber

      Hi,

We’re glad that you like Viber!

There is no option to disable outgoing calls. If you are concerned with making unwanted calls, you can enable a screen lock on your phone preventing calls from being placed when your phone is locked.

    Hai Viber,
I’ve been looking into the Viber Out rates and I’m surprised the rates for The Netherlands are much much higher than other countries. For example nearly 6 times as much as the USA. I saw the same at Skype. Why is this? It doesn’t feel fair. Though if I call from NL to USA, I pay USA rates right?

    • http://www.viber.com/ Viber

      Hi Dorith,

Viber Out rates are meant to be competitive with premium international providers. We try, but cannot always, compete with local carriers.

We appreciate you making us aware of this price discrepancy and we will look into it.

You are correct – Viber Out prices are dependent on the call destination, so calling from The Netherlands to the USA will cost the USA rate.

will viber continue to work if my phone service is no longer active? it’s reading off contacts from my phone number.

    • http://www.viber.com/ Viber

Viber will continue to work, however, you should note that if you are no longer the owner of that phone number, it is possible that you will get kicked out of your account. Once your phone company gives your old number to someone new, they can activate Viber which will disable your account.

Please back up your message history (learn how here: http://bit.ly/XhMdHR) so that your messages are not deleted if you can no longer access your account.

how does viber work on cruise ships

    • http://www.viber.com/ Viber

In order to use Viber on your cruise ship, you must be connected to a stable internet connection. Viber will run normally once you are connected.

  • Biswaranjan Sahoo

Actually I wanted to know whenever I try to make a call it says that i don,t have any credit balance. But I thought Viber was for making free calls. Help please

    • http://www.viber.com/ Viber

      Viber-to-Viber calls are free.

It sounds as though you are trying to call a user that does not have Viber installed. In this case, you will need to purchase Viber Out credit in order to place a call to this user. You can find out more information here: http://bit.ly/1el6I8E

  • Thank You

What if I’m using 4g LTE? And does it also consume more data if the call/text is farther? (USA to Singapore)

  • Ashish

i m using viber. what will be the average consumption per minute during video call?

  • Marlene Soto

Is there a limit of minutes you have per call?

    • http://www.viber.com/ Viber

      Hi,

There is no limit to Viber-to-Viber call length.

As long as you have a stable internet connection, you will be able to maintain the call.

  • JBrook

Are the calls and texts I make with viber going to show up on my phone bill? I understand I will not be charged for them, but will the number I am contacting be viewable on my phone bill statement in a detailed call log?
